About this listen
I was startled and could not hide my astonishment
"How come, Rosenberg? I mean, how?"
I could not find appropriate words to express my curiosity.
"Ajit, I am a social worker by profession but a sex worker by choice."
She tried to clarify but made me a bit confused
"And if you don't find it an unnecessary intrusion, can you please explain in a bit detail the reason for your adopting this choice?”
I asked her in the best manner a person can adopt to pose such an awkward question.
"No, not at all. I'm a hotel lodger who has to pay a price for living here full-time.”
She answered me without any hint of remorse or anything in her eyes.
"How does it work out?"
I inquired, intrigued.
"There are thousands of homeless girls and women, Ajit, who are what they call working women. They do not make enough money to acquire or rent a decent living place. So, what they do is to approach hotels that provide them lodging free of charge. Only our meals and washing must be paid for."
“And what is the trade-off? The quid pro quo?"
I asked her
"If you're looking for a one-word response, look no further than prostitution. We are, however, not prostitutes. We're sex-lodgers, as they call us. They treat our rooms as though they were empty, assigning them to men, generally senior executives like you."
She replied looking into my eyes.
"But, they didn't do it with me?"
I said with a concealed sense of dejection
" Because you must have got a reservation for an executive suite rather than an executive room. The executive room is a room with a sex lodger already staying. It's OK if that guy wants to stay in his shared room with the option of free sex."
If he refuses to agree?"
I asked jokingly
"Yes, there are idiots who refuse to accept this bargain and want a room change."
She said with a meaningful smile on her face.
"And from where do these fools come? Are they mostly from Arab countries?"
No, most of them are from India. You now see why you were not accommodated in a sex lodger's executive room.
"Yes, I understand your point."
I said, nodding my head.
" And Arabs? Jesus Christ, They are the most enthusiastic and frequent guests. They are a huge source of revenue for a hotel. They consume everything in the room's mini bar, order delectable lunches and sumptuous dinners, and, most importantly, return in droves."
She explained.
"So there you have it, a very smart business model."
I replied
“Yes, and if you are interested, I can request the hotel management change your room"
She asked me inquiringly. I immediately consented.
