The discovery of the structure of DNA, in 1953, by Watson and Crick, was arguably the most important discovery in biology of that century; and certainly one of the most important discoveries in science, ever. Around sixty years later; we have already cracked the human genome (we know the nature of all codes within the DNA in human beings) and can sequence DNA and copy DNA very quickly. Our knowledge of the evolutionary relationships between living things has been greatly improved by knowing the similarities and differences of their genes. Here are a few astonishing facts about DNA that have been discovered since 1953: there are about 3 billion DNA bases within every human cell; each human has between twenty and thirty thousand genes; every one of the cells in a living organism (including large, multi-cellular organisms with billions of cells, such as humans) contain the same DNA (except sperm and egg cells which have half the DNA); humans share about 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees and 36% with fruit flies. With the knowledge about DNA that we now have; we are able to genetically engineer; mice that glow in the dark; rice that contains large amounts vitamin A; bacteria that produce human insulin; to name but a few. They are talking about bringing back extinct species to life; de-extinction of the Passenger Pigeon and the Dodo. So there is a brave new world opening up in front of us; biotechnology will continue to move forward rapidly with genetic engineering. What I want to do in this book is to give you a thorough introduction to DNA; to its structure and function and explain why it is so important.
