About this listen

One death by spontaneous human combustion is a rare act of God. Two... is surely a freakish coincidence. Three... well, that's starting to look deliberate.

Cara has a new role as Queen Victoria's artifact hunter, she's adapting to married life and living in a country manor that more closely resembles a mausoleum. In London, Inspector Fraser investigates a series of strange deaths by divine fire - except he doesn't believe in coincidences. Despite himself, he enlists Cara's help to identify what artifact could cause such a hideous death while his desire to bring her husband to justice burns unabated. Someone's intent on making sure a decades old secret stays hidden and Cara must figure out who is responsible before this case consumes her family and rocks the entire realm to its foundations.

Intriguing Listen

The third in the series finds Cara and Nate searching for Nero's fiddle and trying to determine its mystical powers. Inspector Fraser is investigating some mysterious deaths by spontaneous combustion, rare occurrences indeed. And Nate, jealous of Fraser's interest in Cara, is not in favor of working with the authorities on the case. Cara goes back to reading her father's journals which have pages missing to learn about the fiddle and goes to visit her grandmother to learn more about her past. (The best part of the book is her visit to her grandmother and her life long friend.) The investigation and quirky inventions of Nate and his pirate friends make these books unique. Great conclusion.

This series started out as a novelty to me, but with each installment it grows and improves. I am so glad I discovered it.

Slow, But Eventually Picks Up & Gets There!

Slow, But Eventually Picks Up & Gets There! Overall, a Good Story and interesting, only problem is that it is like a rock rolling downhill. It starts slow and needs to pick up speed to eventually get you there, but the “there” is all the way at the end in the last one or two chapters, that the big reveal occurs and all is explained.

A typical story/plot structure, but the issue here is how much of the book (most of it), that you are just wandering around clueless while trying to stay on the ride that is this story, long enough, for you to figure what is going on, besides people and characters just droning on and on, about seemingly nothing.

While in the end, I did enjoy this tale, it was entirely too slow in speed, action, and explanations that tied together to make a cohesive story (except when all the who did what when and why, gets dumped on you, right at the end.)

Nero's Fiddle, a tale of intrigue & excitement!

Would you consider the audio edition of Nero's Fiddle to be better than the print version?

A true bibliophile at heart, I love a good story wether told by a wonderful story teller of read from the tactile pages of a good book! The only downfall to E-Lit is that the editing generally is left lacking. There are a few errors in the editing to the E-version here which the oral version does not share, but all-in-all the story itself is a true gem of steampunk fun.

What did you like best about this story?

Hmmm .. what I liked best ... ahhh... there is much revealed inside this tale and as to what all it is I will not spoil it for the reader/listener. Suffice it to say that there are many unexpected twists and turns and quite a lot of enlightenment in this 3rd installment of the Artifact Hunters series. I truly love that A.W. Exley will always keep you guessing and Gemma Dawson will always draw you in with her wonderful gift of the telling!

What does Gemma Dawson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Gemma Dawson simply has a wonderful way of magicking you into the story and holding you enraptured to the very end. She brings the characters and the world to life around her audience. Gemma is a true gem and the listeners are all the richer for the fact we are able to enjoy the gift of her story telling!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are several moments that really make this story so wonderful but my favorite is a moment between Nan and Nessy. There are a few actually and I will leave it to the audience to pick their own.

Any additional comments?

I am most certainly looking forward to the 4th and final installment of the Artifact Hunters series, Moseh's Staff, which is rumored to be coming out in April 2015 and I do indeed hope that Gemma Dawson will again be the voice of the story! I am so looking forward to more magical worlds from A.W. Exley in the near future.
