About this listen

Summary: Even high-class prostitute is better than this dullness I live in,” thought Julián before he left everything behind. Poor, uneducated and low class, the youth had all odds against him, but his beauty and determination to get his way were his greatest capital. A simple job for an eccentric and aloof man could prove to be mankind’s greatest challenge. Book trailer: http://tionne74.blogspot.mx/2015/04/lykos-video.html Review: Tionne Roger’s novels, I believe, do not fit into the conventions of mainstream slash. Case in point, “The Forgotten Ones”, while it depicts a homosexual relationship and does contain a dash of homoerotica, is not a story about the romantic relationship between two male characters. Romance is not something you will find in this story, so you have been forewarned. On the other hand, what you will find is difficult to classify genre-wise. If pressed, I would classify it as the compromise between sci-fi and modern fantasy, with a sobering dose of reality. Under the premise that sci-fi fiction is, beyond its futuristic imagery, first and foremost a social commentary on the type of society our scientific and technological knowledge can build, I would dare to claim that, yes, “The Forgotten Ones” can be read as sci-fi. One of the major sources of conflict and tragedy in the story is brought about by current scientific developments. And the knowledge that this is how we are nowadays using science to solve humanity’s problems, will make the nature of said conflict downright chilling. But, how do the characters become involved in the conflict? What part do they play in it? Well, that falls more into the realm of modern fantasy. What would have happened if vengeful gods had a say in human evolution? The answer to that is something our main character, Julián (a boy from Madrid trying to figure what to do as part of a forsaken generation in a world suffering from the consequences of the current economic crisis), will discover when he accepts a job dog-sitting Lýkos, a temperamental wolf-dog. As an unwitting Julián falls down the proverbial rabbit hole, what we will read is a story that digs far back into the obscure beginnings of humankind to draw a picture of a bleak future in the face of modern-day human hubris and indolence.
