• Ep. 1062: Backpacking Across the Country of Georgia - Revisited - Alexandre Bilodeau Desbiens

Oftentimes the best adventures are not in the most well-known places or in the most dramatic of sceneries. Hidden gems of adventure are all around us. In fact, as we say on this show, adventure is anywhere you are.

Alexandre had his sights set on Turkey, a country he had longed to visit. Little did he know, the adjacent and lesser-traveled country of Georgia would quickly become one of his favorite places in his more than seven-year full-time travel adventure.

  • Ep. 1061: Circumnavigate the US by Bike & Kayak - Revisited - Renata Chlumska
    Oct 30 2024

    Originally published July 25, 2022

Renata is a legendary Czech-born adventurer and mountaineer. She was the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the world’s “25 adventure goddesses."

In 2005, after the death of her partner, Göran Kropp (also a well-known adventurer), she embarked on what she calls the "Around America Adventure". She would circumnavigate the lower 48 US states by bike and kayak. When biking, she would pull her kayak behind her with a set of two wheels and while kayaking, she would ship her bike ahead of her at the next portion of the trip.

She started in Seattle and paddled to San Diego, bicycled San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, continued kayaking around Florida to Eastport, Maine, and then bicycled back to Seattle across the northern portion of the US. Through this experience she became the first person to circumnavigate the US this way. This is a wild, unique, and beautiful story of what a true adventure really means.

  • Ep. 1057: The Longest Annual Paddle Race in the US - Revisited - Greg Wingo
    Sep 6 2024

You might not think of Alabama as holding many records in the world of endurance races (at least I didn’t), however, you’d be wrong! Alabama is home to the Great Alabama 650, a 650-mile paddle race down the Alabama Scenic River Trail going from the northern part of the state out to the Gulf of Mexico. Racers face whitewater, battle tidewater currents, and hike around a dozen dams in an effort to reach the ocean and are expected to finish between 7-10 days.

Today we’re talking with the AL650 race director, Greg Wingo to learn just how challenging a race like this is to plan as well as compete in.

Also, Adventure Sports Podcast is now a sponsor of Greg’s other race, Last Paddler Standing. Mason will be commentating during the LPS in December.

  • Ep. 1056: take less. do more - Glen Van Peski
    Aug 28 2024

Glen Van Peski is a retired civil engineer who accidentally started the ultralight backpacking gear company Gossamer Gear. Besides an avid ultralight backpacker and bike packer in the U.S. and abroad, he’s an entrepreneur, author, speaker, philanthropist and dishwasher. He recently wrote take less. do more. Surprising Life Lessons on Generosity, Gratitude and Curiosity from an Ultralight Backpacker, after he realized that the lessons he learned from almost 50 years of lightening his pack weight also had applications to living a more fulfilling life off the trail.

His extensive outdoor adventures include hiking most of the Pacific Crest Trail, exploring the backcountry in Japan and Europe, and bikepacking along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR). Glen lives in Bend, Oregon, with wife of over 40 years Francie, and is the father of two grown sons.

Graeme Esarey is a sailor, climber, skier, and father of 2 adventurous girls.
