  • 280-Reconciling Crisis in Spirit, Soul, and Body
    Nov 22 2024

HOPE IN THE STORM- Let's explore the dynamics of being a triune being—body, soul, and spirit—during times of crisis and trauma. Learn how to reconcile the tension between your spirit, rooted in divine truth, and your soul, which may be grappling with pain, grief, or fear. Through scripture, reflection, and practical steps, discover how to anchor yourself in God's presence, even in the midst of life’s storms.

    Three Key Takeaways:

    1. Understanding the Triune Nature of Humanity: We are made up of spirit (our connection to God), soul (mind, will, emotions, personality), and body. While our spirit holds eternal truths, our soul and body often react to external circumstances. It’s normal for them to feel out of sync, but anchoring ourselves in the spirit brings alignment and peace.

    2. The Role of Free Will in Suffering: Suffering exists because of free will, given to humanity so we could choose love and relationship with God. Even amidst pain, God’s ultimate plan of redemption offers hope and an eternal perspective beyond our present hardships.

    3. Encouragement for the Soul in Crisis: Condemnation is not from God. While conviction lovingly calls us toward Him, shame pushes us away. By leaning into God’s truth, allowing the spirit to lead, and practicing intentional acts of faith—like speaking scripture over your life—we can navigate the emotional storms with peace and hope.

Listener Challenge: This week, reflect on Psalm 23:6: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." Write it down, set it as a reminder on your phone, or speak it aloud daily. Allow this truth to be written on your heart. As you meditate on it, journal how it changes your perspective in difficult moments.

  • 279-Top 10 Things to NOT Say to Someone in Crisis
    Nov 1 2024

    HOPE IN THE STORM-

Let’s explore how to truly support someone in crisis by understanding what not to say. Even well-meaning words can unintentionally hurt or create distance when someone is going through an intense, personal struggle. By avoiding certain phrases and focusing on empathy, we can offer genuine comfort that doesn’t inadvertently invalidate their experience.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Avoid Minimizing Language – Phrases like “It could be worse” or “Everything happens for a reason” can feel dismissive and minimize the person’s experience. Instead, validate their pain by acknowledging the difficulty of their situation.
    2. Offer Tangible Support – Saying “Let me know how I can help” often puts the burden on the person in crisis. Instead, offer specific help, like cooking a meal, running errands, or simply being present.
    3. Focus on Listening, Not Fixing – Sometimes, trying to “fix” the situation with positive thinking or comparisons can be counterproductive. Simply listening and letting the person express their emotions can be the most supportive thing you can do. Learn how to get comfortable with negative emotions so you don’t feel the need to ‘fix’ the moment or the person.

Listener Challenge: Next time someone you know is facing a crisis, practice empathy without giving advice or solutions. Instead, try asking questions like, “How are you feeling right now?” or “Would you like to talk more about it?” Make space for their emotions without attempting to guide them toward a “silver lining.”

  • 278-Navigating Survivor's Guilt
    Oct 30 2024

HOPE IN THE STORM- Survivor’s guilt is a complex emotional response that people may experience after surviving a traumatic event where others did not. Whether someone has survived an accident, illness, or natural disaster, this guilt can leave lasting psychological effects that complicate the healing process. In this post, we'll explore what survivor's guilt is, the symptoms that accompany it, ways to heal from it, and how biblical truths can provide comfort and guidance. In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the topic of survivor's guilt—a heavy burden many carry after witnessing tragedy, loss, or disaster. We’ll explore what survivor’s guilt looks like, how to recognize the signs, pathways to healing, and how biblical truths can offer peace and comfort.

    Key Takeaways
    1. Survivor’s Guilt and Its Manifestations Survivor’s guilt can include intrusive thoughts, sadness, shame, anxiety, and sometimes physical symptoms. Recognizing these signs can be the first step in working toward healing and understanding that these reactions are part of processing trauma.

    2. Healing Through Self-Compassion and Support Healing requires acknowledging your emotions, reaching out for support, and extending self-compassion. A support network can offer unique perspectives and help you release feelings of guilt and self-blame.

    3. Finding Comfort in Biblical Truths Passages like Psalm 34:18 remind us that God is close to the brokenhearted, offering comfort and a sense of purpose even when emotions seem overwhelming. Recognizing that we are part of God’s larger plan can provide peace and hope to move forward.

    Listener Challenge

If you or someone you know is struggling with survivor’s guilt, try to recognize one positive action you can take today to honor what’s been lost. Whether it’s reaching out to a loved one, helping a friend, or taking a moment for self-reflection, small acts can begin to restore hope and a sense of purpose.
