The Local Lens

By: The Local Lens
  • Summary

  • The Local Lens is a podcast from the Powell County Health Department and Northeast Kentucky RHIO where we dive into our community’s experience with the drug epidemic. Everyone in the community has a different vantage point of what the drug issue looks like, shaped by their personal lives and professional roles. In this show, we are showcasing as many of those perspectives as we can through honest and informative conversations. By broadcasting the conversations here, we hope to reduce stigma and begin to find solutions. These are our people, using our voices, telling our stories, because no one sees it like we do.Help us out by taking this survey! https://forms.gle/B3jLoBT2jPZKyru66

    Apr 19 2023

The Local Lens is a public health podcast going inside one community's experience with the drug epidemic. Everyone in the town of Stanton, KY sees this drug issue differently from each other, either because of their personal lives or professional roles. This show aims to showcase those different perspectives by having honest, in-depth interviews.

In our previous episode, we started to learn about Franklin County's Just Say Yes program (listen to that episode here). In this episode, we're going into the "why" behind it all, both in Frankfort's Just Say Yes program and in any form of public work.

We don't shy away from theory, we talk about intentions and having our actions match our intentions, we talk about what justifies government spending.

It's a can of worms, and it's likely our final episode. Welcome to it, folks. These are our people, using our voices, telling our stories, because no one sees it like we do.

Iceland seems to have found a way to substantially reduce teen substance use. In fact, they flipped from having the worst rates in Europe to the best rates of teen substance use in less than two decades. What lies at the base of this approach? Well, that's what we're here to figure out today.

Amelia Berry, from the Franklin County Health Department, joins the show to tell us about not only the Icelandic Prevention Model, but also the program she is helping to run using that model: Just Say Yes. There are so many details to cover on this topic, so strap in and sponge up.

  • The Job Connection: The SITE Program at EKCEP - Barbara Gay, Brittany Kegley, and Tesa Turner

Among the many problems facing Eastern Kentuckians, one of the most foundational is the lack of consistent job opportunities. The lack of income and structure a job provides compounds with several other issues that make it pretty difficult to maintain a desired life. For people in active addiction or in recovery, the effects of either having or not having a job are multiplied, as we've heard countless times over the course of The Local Lens.

The Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP) has been helping all Kentuckians find employment for years, but now they have launched a new program designed specifically for people in recovery. The Strategic Initiative for Transformational Employment (SITE) is designed to help connect people in recovery who are looking to launch careers with the employers around our state looking to fill openings.

Their approach takes time and effort -- they hope to get people into a dream career with a full, bright future, not just the first job available. SITE works with people to find something they can be excited about, something they can rally behind.

These are our people, using our voices, telling our stories, because no one sees it like we do.
