  • Creature Feature 84- Washed Up on Shore
    Nov 23 2024

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at the Montauk Monster. This monster was never seen alive, being discovered as a carcass in 2008. Within 2 weeks, the news became a media sensation, but the women who discovered it and the carcass both mysteriously disappeared. Cryptozoologists were divided, but one began to investigate. Where was the Montauk Monster found? Where did it go? What does an animal research facility have to do with it? Listen in to find out!

  • Episode 137- No, it's Mine!
    Nov 20 2024

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at some history to discover the location of the Lost Mines of Ophir. In the Bible, mentions are made of a mine filled with gold. There is even evidence that proves that this was a real place. We just don't know the location. Who used the mine? What else was exported from Ophir? Where is it? Listen in to hear all the theories!

A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at Baba Yaga. Existing solely in folklore, she is said to be the purest form of evil. Her appearance in fairy tales from Slavic countries and Russia show her to be more aligned with the Trickster archetype though. She has a taste for eating children, but often lets them get away. What is Baba Yaga? How does she get around? Where did she come from? Listen in to find out!

  • Episode 136- Man-Made or Coincidence?
    Nov 13 2024

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're off to Japan, to look at a structure found under the sea. In the 1980s, divers discovered it, but it's been the subject of much discussion. Some people believe that it's evidence of an ancient culture, lost to the ocean due to tectonic activity in the area. Where is the structure? Who could have built it? What are the theories? Listen in to hear all the theories!

This week we're looking at the Drop Bear. Native to Australia, these creatures are related to koalas. They are carnivorous and drop from great heights to incapacitate their prey. Australians are less likely to be attacked by them and have some ways to help tourists fend them off too. What does a Drop Bear eat? How do you protect yourself? Do they even look like koalas? Nov 6 2024

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're off to space, to take a look at black holes again. We've looked at these before, but this time we're looking at how they're formed. We already know how one size of black hole is created, but what about the other two? Scientists have been looking into these sorts of things for a long time, but we don't seem to be any closer to answers. What kind of black holes are there? How do we detect them? What are scientists planning to do in 2025? Listen in to hear all the theories!

  • Creature Feature 81- It's Not What You Think It Is
    Nov 2 2024

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at the Not-Deer. The history of this creature is quite odd, appearing on Reddit first in 2019. There's a lot of jumping backwards and forwards during the history of this creature. Because they mostly look just like a deer with something off about them, there's no description of them this time. Where did the story of the Not-Deer first appear? Is there any evidence of these creatures? Are the eyewitness reports to be trusted? Listen in to find out!

    Oct 31 2024

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. This week, is opening week and we're looking at ghosts! It's Halloween, and the end of opening week! Today, we're off to San Jose, California, to take a look at the Winchester Mystery House. Before building the house, Sarah Winchester married the son of the man who created the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After several deaths in the family, Sarah was instructed to go west, from Connecticut to California. When she got there, she had a house built that almost makes no sense. Why did Sarah move to California? What was the house like? Are there really ghosts there? Listen in to hear all the theories!
