Ivan Lyashkevsky, a Polish lieutenant who suffered a head injury, spends a large amount of time grumbling about the native people of the town he's living in. Three men, Mihailo the porter, Nikandr the fish merchant, and Stepan the coachman, sit around a table in the coach-house playing a game of "kings" with Stepan's eight-year old grandson, Alyoshka. While each card player competitively tries to win the coveted position of "king" in the game, a more serious atmosphere casts a sad shadow over the estate in which the coach-house is situated. The man of the house, for whom the porter and coachman work, has attempted suicide, and he lies in the estate house struggling somewhere between life and death.

Antón Chéjov (1860-1904) - Dramaturgo y autor de relatos ruso, es una de las figuras más destacadas de la literatura rusa. Chèjov nació el 29 de enero de 1860 en Taganrog y estudió medicina en la Universidad Estatal de Moscú. Casi no ejerció su profesión debido a su éxito como escritor y porque padecía tuberculosis. Casi a finales de siglo conoció al actor y productor Konstantín Stanislavski, director del Teatro de Arte de Moscú.

Cada año por Navidad, desde hace trece años, el consejero de Estado Navaguin encuentra entre las firmas del libro de visitas la de un tal Fedinkof. El Sr. Navaguin no sale de su asombro pues no sabe quién puede ser, ni cómo ni cuándo entra en su casa para firmar. Arrastrado por la curiosidad, finalmente decide recurrir a su esposa para que intente contactar con Fedinkof mediante sus técnicas de médium.
