About this listen

Friends since childhood, Anais Darnby and Lindsay Markham have long harbored a secret passion for one another. When they finally confess their love, their future together seems assured, sealed with their searing embrace.

But when a debauched Lindsay is seduced by a scheming socialite, a devastated Anais seeks refuge in another man's bed while Lindsay retreats to the exotic East. There, he is seduced again - this time by the alluring red smoke and sinister beauty of opium.

Back home, Lindsay's addiction is fed by the vogue for all things Oriental - especially its sensual pleasures - in fashionable London society. In his lucid moments, Lindsay still lusts after Anais, who can neither allow him near nor forget his smoldering touch. Tortured by two obsessions - opium and Anais - Lindsay must ultimately decide which is the one he truly cannot live without.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator!!!!!!!!!!!

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I'm not really sure because the narration was so bad that I had problems truly following the story. I might have to read the book to see if I like the book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Montana Chase’s performances?

NO - NEVER!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom, but I'm just not sure if it was due to the narration or the story.

Fingernails on a chalk board!

This book is a fantastic read, I read it a couple years ago and have listened to it twice. It's a serious book with a real look at drug addiction in this time period. This poor woman loves that man so much she just won't quit on him. I loved this story, I was completely sucked in from the first. I have read the other books that tie into this one, they are all excellent but serious reads.

Tragic - but excellent!

Highly recommended!!! Addicted is one of the best reads I have had in a long time. There is love, drugs, betrayal, and a good look into the turn of the century drug epademic. It was very entertaining and had a bit of umph as well. Narrorator was great and appropriate for the tone of the book.

This book has it all!

I liked the book very much, the only thing I disliked and was the narrator! It's a shame really, the book looses very much with such a bad narrator.

Interesting

The highly erotic story was probably pretty good, but I kept getting bored by the incredibly slow pace of the reader. The male voices were pitched even higher than the female, and I have no idea why Anais was constantly mispronounced as Anias. I fault the producer for letting such a shabby rendition of the story out of the studio.

The most aweful reader I have ever heard!

While I picked this out as a romance and it is a romance, the writer went far above and beyond in the telling of this story. This is about more than just love, its an honest look at what addiction to opium was like back in the day. Its honest, gritty approach to how others lives are affected also is engrossing and pulls you in deeper and deeper until you genuinely care about the characters. Well done, couldn't put it down.

A must read

What would have made Addicted better?

Better narrator. Awful voice characterizations. Monotonous writing. Monthlies, really? Not interesting to reader.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlotte Featherstone again?

I have enjoyed her other books

What didn’t you like about Montana Chase’s performance?

Her voice characterizations. Bad men's voices and worst accents.

What character would you cut from Addicted?

All of them.

Any additional comments?

Fairly rarely do I not finish a book. This one I couldn't continue. I want my point back.

I wish I read the other reviews

This book had too much drug hazed fantasy for me. The dialog was full of anachronisms, which really bugged me. Just an annoying listen.

Seriously?
