About this listen

Warning! This story is a dark, haunting psycho-thriller intended for mature readers! Five years ago, life for Logan Emery had meaning and goals, a possibility of new love, and increased job satisfaction and prestige. As a detective for the Meriden Police Department, he had one of Connecticut's best arrest and conviction rates. Staying ahead of the ever-increasing crime rate required patience, bravery, problem-solving skills, observation to detail, community involvement, and, more importantly, Logan's inimitable intuition. But all that changed after solving one of the most gruesome and disturbing serial killer cases. Frustrated with not getting a well-deserved promotion to Division Commander, he quit the only job he ever knew since leaving the military. After a failed attempt at opening a private detective agency, and recently divorcing his first love, he's been living in a flat behind his son's house, lonely, wallowing in despair and self-pity, at the bottom of his game. He grew up in Meriden, Connecticut, on the Interstate 91 corridor between Hartford and New Haven. The city sits at the base of an ancient volcanic ridge eroded by the last glacial retreat, leaving behind the scenic Hanging Hills which gently rise in the northwest, and the mysterious Black Mountain cliffs on the east side. When the MPD investigates the recent murder of a young woman found at the bottom of Black Mountain, similar to the serial killings of five years ago, they ask for Logan's assistance. It requires him to investigate the east side of town where he grew up, reawakening dark childhood memories when living with his dysfunctional family. Memories he's tried to forget since leaving home. While on retainer with the MPD, he's asked to work alongside his previous partner, Detective Krystal Strong, and together they try to solve the gruesome murder. Shaken awake from his five year depression, Logan hopes that his involvement in the case will rekindle a life with new purpose. But, investigating on the east side of town and in Hubbard Park, the disposal grounds of the previous serial killings, has a downside. It slowly reawakens repressed memories of horrible events from his past. Blurred lines between love and work relationships, myth, city lore, and reality get in the way. Logan tells this haunting story in his words, and you, the reader, will know what he senses and experiences. You will accompany him on a twisted ride inside a murder case involving deception, mistrust, lies, and dead ends. Can you find the killer before he does? His life and the lives of others may depend on it. But don't go near Black Pond if you can't swim, for it may keep your heart and soul in its bottomless waters for eternity.
