About this listen

We're all used to encountering even the most hardcore porn from the comfort and privacy of our computer screens, but how many of us would go see it live?

Thought Catalog editor Chelsea Fagan did, spending an evening in the world of live sex shows and hardcore pornography. Here, she gives us the guided tour to everything from rules about condoms to the pressure of facials, showing us a world that is at once completely familiar and something we've never quite seen before.

Overall it was humerous, entertaining and insightful. It would have been more interesting if it had been a deeper and broader dive into porn in general, Perhaps this will become a sort of series about porn.

Interesting short read on a live porn show

An editorial style presentation that brings to life many things people that consume porn tend to ignore or hide while consuming. This was a tiny peek into the people and perception of porn.

I had high hopes for this book and in some ways it was good and others not. The good issues with this book were the situations which the author describes. Some were downright funny and I found them well written. The not so good issues were the tedious references using gender (male) in a negative light. The females in the book, both customers and porn actresses were mostly described as total victims while the men were all mostly described as perverted mental wolves. The author was more than careful to portray the females as victims of mental health issues but did not allow the males the same consideration. If a man is masturbating in public that, in and of itself, displays a mental health issue. However, the author simply portrayed such behavior as being practiced by perverts where a call to the local police to arrest the pervert was extremely satisfying to her. I wonder if a call to a crisis worker for intervention might have worked better?

The other issue I had with the book was the teen girlish attempt at cynicism and edginess that pervades the book. It's a constant presence that leaves you feeling as though you're listening to a teen girl attempting to be edgy and cynical in order to appear special. I would have liked it better if the author had allowed the book to stand on its own merits. There was much good interesting material but I found the cynicism more than a bit tiresome.

I had hopes for a book that would help describe the hidden life a people who frequent porn. What are they privately into, who are they and how do they practice their porn consumption. In many ways this book did not disappoint in that area. However, the negative aspects were a bit tough to get past although I did manage it. It's only 45 minutes so I was able to roll my eyes a bit and endure it for the good parts.

Engaging but tedious

The author gives her view point on the live sex scene with an air of looking down on the consumers and workers of the industry.

disappointing

I thought this would be more scintillating. But honestly, it was just a female journalist reflecting on seeing a live sex act. The story was deflated and not memorable.

Boring

The author makes it pretty clear that she's only watching the show just to get interviews for a report and that she's not into porn, so we automatically know what kind of report she's writing: an elitist snobbish piece, and all we have to do to verify this is to listen through to the end where she basically forces herself to say one nice thing. I was looking for erotic fiction or nonfiction and got what amounts to a dry book report. I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this, or I'd have been asking for a refund halfway through.

Snobbery
