About this listen

Summerhills continues the story of the lives and loves of the Ayrton family, in particular that of Major Roger Ayrton M.C., his brother, and three young half-sisters.

Roger has made the Army his career. Anne has settled down as housekeeper to old Mr Orme, the rector. Nell looks after the old house, and it is upon her that the comfort and well-being of the family depend.

A new generation is growing up. The story begins as Roger flies home to Amberwell on leave, full of plans for his family and home.

Satisfactory Sequel to Amberwell

Set in post WWII England, this is the gentle continuation of the story of Amberwell, and its inhabitants. A very pleasant read. Lesley Mackie's narration is perfect.

Wonderful Sequal to Amberwell! Don't Miss this One

To Everyone who loves DE Stevenson Summer hills a sequel to Amber well is a must. Back are most of the characters in the first book. This book follows Anne ,Nell and Roger.
It is gentle story of a Pastoral English country house and a way of life that was radically changed by the War.
The narration is excellent and draws you in right away even if you did not listen to the first book, Amber well. I hope Audible offers more DE Stevenson Books to a new audience of fans.

A Delightful Story!

After reading “Amberwell” I jumped right into “Summer Hills”. I love how Dorothy E. Stevenson would have 3 books in a series.

Wonderful followup.

I very much enjoyed listening to this sequel to Amberwell. Lesley Mackie's voice is perfect for the series. I very much enjoyed following the continued lives of the Aryton family and their friends. I love books about Scotland and this one is high on my list.

Loved this entire series

These were really sweet novels. The author does a wonderful job depicting the secret world children build away from adults, the love of place that runs through generations for a family home, and bittersweet pain involved in having a "difficult" parent and living with the choices we make to escape that person....

Charming

Another lovely story from D.E. Stevenson. Her stories are such a nice change of pace from all the violence and dysfunction in current fiction. The stories are sweet without being sappy. Delightful.

A Wonderfully Gentle Period Piece

This sequel is a gentle romance set in the mid-20th century. I strongly urge you to read the precursor "Amberwell" first. This story deals with the adult lives of the 5 Amberwell children who came to adulthood in the years just before and during WW II. The story is better understood if you have some knowledge of the post-war Austerity period in the UK. Keep the story in the context of its era and you will enjoy it much more.It portrays a vanished world. It's one of the first mainstream romance YA-Lit works that deals with the blight of spousal abuse, althought it is in no way explicit about it. The overall feel of the story is sweet, slow, content and optimistic.

Ms. Mackie does a wonderful job with the reading.

Excellent sequel to "Amberwell"

Would you listen to Summerhills again? Why?

Years ago, I read as many of DE Stevenson's books as I could find but they are

What was one of the most memorable moments of Summerhills?

In almost all of DE Stevenson's books, there is a moment when someone realizes they have been in love with someone else for a long time without knowing it, and this book is no exception.

What about Lesley Mackie???s performance did you like?

Lesley has a beautiful voice. Every word is clear and her accents are just enough to distinguish the different characters without going

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are a few very romantic moments that did make me cry.

Any additional comments?

This is a sequel to Amberwell, so it's best to read it after the first book, although it can stand on its own (all the characters and previous situations are explained). Also, I believe that DE Stevenson was related to Robert Louis Stevenson (a cousin?) so she came from a family of writers, and it shows.
