About this listen

Susie Bright is a sexual liberationist of the highest order. The Sexual State of the Union includes essays about dirty pictures and porn, lesbian marriage and lesbian murder, lesbian men and switching genders, vibrators, and the longevity of feminism. The writing is crisp, intelligent, and provocative; there is sure to be something that will make you cheer as well as something that will deeply offend you.

Much of Bright's writing is personal, based on conversations and relationships with queer friends of different genders and sexualities. One of her most impressive strengths is her ability to forthrightly ask obvious questions - "Why did you want to change your gender?" "Why do you want to be hurt?" - without presupposing either judgement or an answer. Bright's mind is open and fertile, curious, and eager.

Critic reviews

"Susie Bright approaches sexuality with an openness and sense of humor that are as disarming as they are radical." (David Ulin, L.A. Reader)

The reading is very enthusiastic especially since it's written from the author's perspective. I thought it was an interesting list or anecdotes while still being informative of the sex-positive feminist perspective

although I feel like this book might be difficult to understand if you haven't been submerged in queer culture of any of the major metros in the US, ie, san francisco, for instance, I think the above average sophisticate can take much meaningful insight from it. I highly recommend going audiobook on this one.

Ultimately, this book looks at how far have we come in terms of understanding sex as a society, and asks the question, why is America still blaming and shaming when we know that those who point the finger are just as deviant as those they ridicule?

On a personal level, I strongly relate to this book as I have felt sexually oppressed for most of my life. I grew up in a Christian household and was taught that sex and sexual thoughts were a

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sexual State of the Union?

Susie's first experience with a porography as a little girl.

Have you listened to any of Susie Bright’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She doesn't laught outloud all the time like she does on her radio show. The book is very well toned and easy to listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book is more about self discovery through listending to another person's experiences and point of view. As with any self discovery, it would be difficult to do it all at once. Plus 6 hours is a really long time.
