Andrew is the President & CEO of Surmani Business Coaching (www.surmanibusinesscoaching.com). Additionally, he is Professor, Music Industry Studies for the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communications at California State University, Northridge and serves as the Academic Lead for the Master of Arts in Music Industry Administration program. Prior to joining the Soundhouse, Andrew was Chief Marketing Officer for Alfred Music, a company where he worked for 29 years. Andrew was a Founding Board Member and is a Past President of the Jazz Education Network (JazzEdNet.org).
He played trumpet in the California All-State Honor Band, the McDonald's All-American High School Marching Band and Jazz Band, and the Walt Disney World All-American College Jazz Band. Andrew attended California State University, Northridge where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance. While at Northridge he played with the CSUN Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz "A" Band. He has toured throughout the USA, Europe and Japan, and has performed in the Montreux (Switzerland), Istanbul (Turkey), Juan les Pins (France), Jazz à Vienne (France) Umbria (Italy), San Sebastian (Spain), Wigan (England) and the Lake Biwa (Japan) jazz festivals. He has also performed in the concert halls of Carnegie Hall, David Geffen and Alice Tully Halls at Lincoln Center, Fumon Hall in Tokyo, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. After playing lead trumpet in shows at Walt Disney World, Andrew returned to southern California to complete his MBA degree and began working for Alfred Music.
He is co-author of Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory, along with his wife Karen Farnum Surmani, a Conejo Valley Unified School District and former Los Angeles Unified School District music educator and Adjunct Faculty at California State University, Northridge, as well as Morton Manus, the former President of Alfred Music. He is also co-author of Copyright Handbook for Music Educators and Directors (1st and 2nd Editions), Alfred's Music Playing Cards: Classical Composers and Alfred's Music Playing Cards: Instruments.
