Gigi became a celebrated stage musical and film; the stage production made a star of Audrey Hepburn, who was personally chosen by Colette for the role, and a dramatized adaptation is the centrepiece of this collection.

Elle finit par s'habituer à la vie dans cette ville qu'elle trouvait dure au début, et commence à sortir et à mener une vie mondaine. Elle ne tarde pas de tomber amoureuse de Renaud, chroniqueur de la vie mondaine, un grand séducteur aux tempes grisonnantes. Malgré l'hostilité de Marcel dont c'est... le père, elle finit par épouser Renaud.

À bien des égards, Renée, l'impétueuse narratrice de La Vagabonde, se pose comme le double de Colette qui signe ici son roman le plus personnel. Comme elle, sa jumelle littéraire est divorcée, actrice de music-hall, écrivaine et surtout farouchement indépendante. Elle se laisse pourtant toucher par Max, un homme beau, brillant et riche : une intrigue simplissime dont Colette a l'audace de prendre le contre-pied pour mieux interroger l'indépendance, le courage et la liberté des femmes et réaffirmer leur force.
