“Diesel” Dave Galloway lives in North Carolina with his wife, Kay. They’ve been blessed with 3 children and 7 grandchildren. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service as a Security Policeman and Paralegal and is a proud veteran of the Gulf War. He is also retired from the state of North Carolina where he worked as the director of the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Program.
Diesel Dave has been an avid bicyclist since he helped start the Seyboro Cyclists Bicycle Club in Goldsboro, NC in 1985. In 2005 he was honored by his club for completing 100,000 bicycle miles in 20 years, helping him earn his “Diesel” nickname. Just one year later he was involved in a near-fatal crash when a motorist crossed the center line on a back country road and struck him on his bicycle head-on. He was air-lifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he remained in a coma for a month, and spent another 2 and ½ months in the hospital before returning home in a wheelchair.
Against all odds, Dave began his long, slow recovery. Doctors told him he’d be lucky to walk again, but he was determined to return to a normal life. While he spent two years in his wheelchair, he did learn to hobble short distances without the wheelchair. Surprisingly, within a year, he was back on his bicycle, thanks to the efforts of some of his Seyboro friends.
Over the ensuing decade, he spent years in physical and occupational therapy and underwent over 25 surgeries to replace or repair infections, orthopedic issues, and internal injuries. But through it, all, he maintained his faith in God, and he credits his recovery to God’s goodness and the thousands of prayers offered up by his family and friends. Today, though he suffers from chronic pain and several physical disabilities, he wakes each morning with the knowledge that he’s being given another day to love and be loved.
