Dorene Lehavi, Ph.D., author, mentor/coach to enterpreneurs is the recognized expert on business partnership relationships. She grew up in Youngstown, Ohio in an entrepreneurial family. Her Dad was a solo owner of an insurance agency while other family members were in business partnerships. Dorene learned a lot about the relationships that form the basis for success in business. Starting her career as a social worker with a variety of agencies, from family agencies, schools, adoption and medical settings in New York City and Jerusalem, Israel, her skills were honed, and became the basis for a private therapy practice in Los Angeles. A few years later, she discovered coaching as a profession, and transitioned from therapy to coaching. Dorene recognized the power of coaching and from her knowledge base as a therapist, and saw that for most people, issues from their past could be sidestepped to move them forward to achieve their goals. Her early clients were lawyers who were dissatisfied either in their chosen profession or placement. In addition to private clients, Dorene conducted workshops at the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Bar Associations, and compiled exercises to help participants discover themselves, setting a path for greater achievement doing what they love. The exercises are available in workbook form from Amazon called “Stop Doing What You Hate Start Doing What You Love”. Clients from other walks of life found their way to Dorene, some of whom were entrepreneurs, and a few who were in business partnerships. When Dorene discovered that 70% of business partnerships fail, she reverted back to her childhood understanding that partnership failure is most often about the relationship between the partners. She decided to make it her mission to change those statistics. Dr. Lehavi points out that it is not only the partners that suffer in breakups, but their families, employees, vendors, customers, the community and even the world economy. Small and mid-size businesses are the back bone of the economy and provide most jobs. Dorene thinks it's far too important, to all of us, to let this problem become the norm when there is a solution. As a result, she has created tools to help people choose the right partner, the first area of big mistakes that are made, followed by her Business Partnership Agreement Template to solidify the relationship and clarify every aspect of the partnership and her What Ifs Scenario Handbook to prepare for the unexpected. Dorene ultimately wrote the "how to" book Business Partnership Essentials: A Step-by-Step Action Plan For Succeeding in Business With a Partner. Noting that it can be lonely at the top, Dr. Lehavi's work is to be the confidante, sounding board and mentor to solo and partner entrepreneurs, inspiring and guiding them to make the changes needed to have the business and life they desire, as they discover they are more than they think they are. Dr. Lehavi is an adjunct professor at USC’s School of Social Work and a member of the Board of Directors of LampCommunity.org servicing the homeless mentally ill in Los Angeles. She mentors at-risk teens with their entrepreneurial studies through Project ECHO.org and supports a variety of local and worldwide causes. Dr. Lehavi acquired her M.S.W. at Hunter College, NYC and her Ph.D. at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she resides and coaches clients all over the world, using technology.
