Dr. Smith was the Mountain View High School Teacher of the Year in 2015, California State Senate Employee of the Year (2016), an eight-time San Jacinto Education Foundation Mini-Grant Recipient (2014-2019, 2022, 2023), and on May 9, 2023, he was named as one of ten Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year (2023) for his exemplary work as a computer science teacher for under-represented and socio-economic disadvantaged high school students. Jordan B. Smith Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Lexington Grade School (K-8). He was selected and participated at a distinguished private Christian Brothers College Military Institute in Clayton, Missouri, from 1968-1972. While there, he became the first African American to achieve the Cadet Lieutenant Colonel rank. Upon graduation, he was also the first African American recipient of the Damian Saber Award for Military Leadership. As a result, he was nominated and received a congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1972. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics upon graduation. While at Annapolis, he became the first African American to be chosen as the 17th Color Company Commander. He was the first African-American to do so in the 131 years of the Naval Academy (1845-1976). After graduation, he received a regular commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served 20 years as a United States Marine reaching the rank of Major as a Logistics Officer and serving in the Gulf War (1990-1991) with Marine Air Group 26. Dr. Smith is a teacher, public speaker, advocate, author, and educational consultant. He has been a public school mathematics teacher in the same Southern California school district for 19+ years. Since joining San Jacinto Unified School District, he has worked at San Jacinto High School for eight years as a math teacher and department chairperson. He has worked for The last ten years at Mountain View Alternative Schools as a math and computer science teacher and WASC Coordinator. Dr. Smith specializes in helping students who overcome their fear of mathematics and have given up on learning. He has helped thousands of high school students recover to earn credits to graduate from high school on time. Since becoming an educator, he has earned a Master's in Secondary Education (2006), a Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a Specialization in Curriculum and Instruction (2015), and a Master's in Administration & Services Credential (2017). For the past eight years, he has been a member and chairperson of visiting committees for the Accrediting Commission for Schools Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC) for Continuation High Schools, Adult Education Schools, Comprehensive high schools, and Alternative Education Schools. He has been a California Department of Education Model School Field Expert for Continuation Schools for four years. He has been a conference presenter for the California Mathematics Council (CMC-S, CMC-N), the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the California Continuation Education Association for several years. He has conducted field testing on new emerging educational technology for several educational software companies, including Pearson, Edmentum, Remind, Family Math Night, Muzology, LocoRobo, Achieve 3000, and Let’sGo Learn. He has also served as a member of Congressman Raul Ruiz's 46th District (CA), Veterans University Advisory Council for four years, and a member of Congressman Ruiz’s Military Service Academy Nomination Panel. His hobbies include singing, music production, writing and most of all teaching math to under-represented high school youth.
