About the Author
Kali Altsoba is the future fiction pen name of military historian Cathal J. Nolan, Director Emeritus of the International History Institute, Pardee School of Global Studies in Boston. His Allure of Battle (Oxford 2018) won the Gilder Lehrman Prize in Military History, the first Distinguished Book Award from War on the Rocks, and was a finalist for MHM Book of the Year in Britain.
He consulted on development issues to the Canadian federal government in the 1980s, and assisted training of diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2011. He advised an anonymous “Force Mobilization Alternatives” briefer to the Ukraine General Staff, in 2023.
He was a Fellow of the Mercatus Center and the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, 2022-2024. In 2022 he briefed War Plans & Planning Guidance, Office of the Secretary of Defense, on “War Planning and the Allure of Battle.” Also, the Future Force Concepts Branch, Directorate of Concepts, Army Futures Command, Leader Professional Development. He consulted to the RAND Corporation on “War in Ukraine & Future Defense Against China and Russia,” from March 2022.
Media talks include CBS Radio, Fox Radio, Radio Free Europe, Newstalk (Ireland), Israel TV1, BBC Mundo and PBS. Lectures or podcasts on YouTube, C-Span, New Books Network, East-West Institute, Dead Prussian, The Historians, and Dangerous History. He consulted to the PBS science series NOVA, appearing on camera in the episode Great Escape at Dunkirk.
His academic career was bookended by two years as a CUSO volunteer in northern Nigeria in the 1970s, and leading student teams to dig PVC pipe trench to bring clean drinking water to remote mountain villages in Honduras in the 2010s. He now tours as a Smithsonian Journeys lecturer.
