Story
At 28, Stephanie Land's dreams of attending a university and becoming a writer quickly dissolved when a summer fling turned into an unplanned pregnancy. Before long, she found herself a single mother, scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet. Maid is an emotionally raw, masterful account of Stephanie's years spent in service to upper-middle-class America as a "nameless ghost" who quietly shared in her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and deepest secrets.

Cant recommend

This should be called “Poor ME”. Ive been a poor single mom and cant relate to this story at all. I cant imagine being so unhappy most of the time. She seems unable to build relationships that are both meaningful and beneficial. I was super disappointed as it was a book club pick.

Just didn’t hold my interest

The story was ok, too much jumping around. Not for me, both story and narration.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

I would certainly have enjoyed this book more if MC was able to speak without cursing. It definitely diminishes him as a mature and respectful man.

Story
The CIA is looking for walking contradictions. Recruiters seek people who can keep a secret, yet pull classified information out of others; who love their country, but are willing to leave it behind to head into dangerous places; who live double lives, but can be trusted with some of the nation's most sensitive tasks. Michele Rigby Assad was one of those people. As a CIA agent, Michele soon found that working undercover was an all-encompassing job. The threats were real. The mission was a perilous one. Trained as a counterterrorism expert, Michele spent over a decade in the agency.

I loved this book. It was also a treat to listen to the author read her own story.
I learned so much about our countries intelligence and appreciate that she went to the trouble to break her cover and share with fellow citizens.
Thank you Michele!!!

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

I had a difficult time feeling that the severity of the injuries and illnesses described by the author to her and her family could have possibly been as severe as stated. “Brains dripping out of a head” is not an injury that one simply gets over.
I felt great empathy for her plight throughout her youth and early adulthood and it was a great relief to reach the end of the story.
