Story
In An Army at Dawn - winner of the Pulitzer Prize - Rick Atkinson provided a dramatic and authoritative history of the Allied triumph in North Africa. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943, attack Italy two months later, and then fight their way, mile by bloody mile, north toward Rome. The Italian campaign's outcome was never certain; in fact, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and their military advisors bitterly debated whether an invasion of the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was even wise.

Story
In September of 1864, a gang of Confederate irregulars stormed a Union train and made off with half a ton of gold which they buried somewhere in Asheville, North Carolina. Late in the winter of that year, Corporal James Donaldson Walker, one of the few surviving robbers, was captured by Union soldiers and was sent to Ship Island, a prisoner of war camp about 12 miles off the coast of Mississippi.

Real life places and current news events well tailored into a novel. The characters are believable and well developed into the plot.. It is easy to visualize people and places. The reader does a good job with accents, voices, and inflection to keep things interesting and moving at the desired pace of action..

Story
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Story
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Personal bias adds nothing to this history
Reviewed: 06-27-20
I was enjoying this deep dive into the past until this presenter inserted his personal bias. The history presentation is interrupted and we are lectured on his personal belief. It seems, in his opinion, the fall of the Mycenaean Empire - and others - was due to "Toxic Masculinity". His only evidence was referencing Homer's writing and the legends of the "Greek Heroic Age". He does so even will telling the listener that history has no answers for the sudden collapse of the Mycenaeans. If you want a PC opinion not fact based history then this is for you - if not try something else.
