The world moves fast, but that doesn't mean we have to. In this best-selling mindfulness guide - it has sold more than three million copies in Korea, where it was a number-one best-seller for 41 weeks and received multiple best book of the year awards - Haemin Sunim (which means "spontaneous wisdom"), a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher born in Korea and educated in the United States, illuminates a path to inner peace and balance amid the overwhelming demands of everyday life.

Gentle and Powerful
Reviewed: 07-01-19
I listened to this straight through as I was driving south from Memphis. I am glad to be able to go back and re-read it. The wisdom here is gentle and powerful. Pratt's narrative tone and pacing is perfect. Eight chapters that combine short essays with shorter "sayings" or nuggets of wisdom. Sunim makes you want to practice a more mindful life. Many mindfulness books exist; this one is more about feeling and living your way toward changes than an eight step plan that makes mindfulness into some kind of accomplishment.

Story
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Engaging, Entertaining
Reviewed: 07-01-19
Yes, there are sound effects, yes, at times there are "recreations" . . but overall these stories that Fry tells are engaging and entertaining. You will find yourself wanting to do a little research after each is over. You will be introduced to a history that you weren't taught in school and will have a different view of British Victorians after it is done.

I enjoyed this listen, but it felt a bit silly. . .the humor at times was strained and I found myself smiling more than laughing.

Surprising. . .

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but found myself caught up in the poetry and musical stories. It is brief--a little over an hour--but the character portraits may have you googling and doing some extra research after the piece is over. . .

through Italy. . . Goulding's central thesis is that Italian food culture is undergoing an evolution--and he is bent on profiling people who want to preserve the best of the past while helping cultivate sustainable, interesting food. The book is at its best when deep in the personal profiles--the three brothers who are cheesemakers, the Lake Como fisherman and his wife, the truffle hunters facing a bad season and sketchy market. At times Goulding's prose sounds a little overwrought (the alliteration and metaphors both get a little strained in parts), but overall it's engaging. As others have noted, the narrator does an approximation of an Italian accent for the Italians. . . I didn't find it offensive and it made sense given the American author's "perspective" that colors all of the profiles. I own the physical book but hadn't read it--I'm glad I got the audible because now I want to go back and look at the accompanying pictures.

Story
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Outstanding Reimagining
Reviewed: 01-19-19
This audible selection works on every level. Miller's novel is a brilliant reimagining of the stories from Homer and Greek mythology, but it is so much more than that. It is, at its core, the exploration of what it means to be human, female, and caught up in levels of power--including one's own power. The narrator, Perdita Weeks, has a voice well matched to the material. I saw this book on several "best of" lists for 2018 and it was recommended by friends whom I trust, so I decided to give it a try. It is well worth it!
