A lonely young heiress becomes the poorest wealthy woman in Victorian England when her father dies without telling anyone where he hid his fortune. Good Plot - Lots of God Stuff
Reviewed: 12-17-20
The plot was interesting and the characters were decently multi-dimemsional. But God plays a big role in the story - literally deus ex machina. For me, it took away some of the agency and intrigue of the characters and their choices. Beautiful language and storytelling, but the god element really flattened what would have been an otherwise great listen.

Story
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

Worth the buzz
Reviewed: 05-15-18
I kept on being told I would love this book, but a perverse stubbornness in me kept on shuffling it to the side. When it went on sale, I decided I might as well listen while I did my dishes. I kept on listening, so immersed that I had to sternly force myself to stop for sleep and work.
Not your average day in the life novel nor your standard stuffy literary fiction, but instead a fun, intriguing slide down the rabbit hole of invention. If you like quirky stories, an unreliable (and changing) narrator, architecture and Antarctica, do yourself a favor and give into the hype.

Story
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Story
An astonishing historical novel set in the shadowy, magical forests of South America, which draws on the captivating world of the international best seller The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. Deep in uncharted Peru, the holy town of Bedlam stands at the edge of a forest. The shrine statues move, and anyone who crosses the border dies. But somewhere inside are cinchona trees, whose bark yields quinine: the only known treatment for malaria. On the other side of the Pacific, it is 1859, and India is ravaged by the disease.

Skipped Netflix Binge To Finish This Story

Extremely well read and inventively written. A complex story that could easily have been a trilogy (three acts). Interesting characters frequently making unorthodox choices; equal parts daring-do, romance, mystery and gothic drama. Funny and riveting. I strongly recommend to fans of the time period who sometimes wish the strong heroines (such as they were) had a little more cunning at their disposal.

David Federman has never felt appreciated. An academically gifted yet painfully forgettable member of his New Jersey high school class, the withdrawn, mild-mannered freshman arrives at Harvard fully expecting to be embraced by a new tribe of high-achieving peers. Struck by her beauty, wit, and sophisticated Manhattan upbringing, David falls feverishly in love.
