Story
"The dead can't hurt you. Only the living can." Effie Jones, a former slave who escaped to the Union side as a child, knows the truth of her words. Taken in by an army surgeon and his wife during the War, she learned to read and write, to tolerate the sight of blood and broken bodies - and to forget what is too painful to bear. Now a young freedwoman, she has returned south to New Orleans and earns her living as an embalmer, her steady hand and skillful incisions compensating for her white employer's shortcomings.

Effie the heroine

Putting off reading this one because of the title I guess. A mistake! Effie is my type of heroine. She is a woman who had fought against adversity and won. This is a type of book I enjoy, a triumph of the human spirit over the brutality and evil of life. Effie begins by working with the dead and ends up nurturing the living. Bravo!

Anne Boleyn may be best known for losing her head, but as Tudor expert Tracy Borman reveals in a book that recasts British history, her greatest legacy lies in the path-breaking reign of her daughter, Elizabeth.

Different narrative of Elizabeth 1
Reviewed: 01-22-24
The highlight for me was the superb narration by the author. Tracy Borman reads well and it keeps the story engaging. Her enthusiasm to tell the story of Anne and Elizabeth from a different viewpoint shines throughout the book. There were so many Boleyn relations that served Elizabeth 1. My only minor criticism is that I needed a family tree of all the Boleyn relatives she mentioned so I could keep the relationships straight. This book was quite similar to Crown and Scepter which Tracy Borman also narrated.

Story
Sixteenth-century Europe was a hostile world dominated by court politics and patriarchal structures–and yet against all odds, two women rose to power: Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici. Much has been written about these shrewd and strategic sovereigns, but though their l legacies have been heavily scrutinized, nothing has been said of their complicated relationship—thirty years of camaraderie, competition, and conflict that forever changed the face of Europe.

Women of Influence and Power

This was an outstanding book. I felt like I knew the characters. The writer brought them to life. Everyone knows of Elizabeth 1 but many do not know of Catherine de Medici. This is a sympathetic history of Catherine however her faults are not spared. It is obvious that the author poured her own blood, sweat and tears into this fine work.

Story
In this original and meticulously researched narrative history, the author of the “stunning” (The Sunday Times) Young and Damned and Fair uses the sinking of the Titanic as a prism through which to examine the end of the Edwardian era and the seismic shift modernity brought to the Anglo-American world.

What can I say about this? I thought I knew the story of Titanic as I watched the Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet film. Wrong! Gareth is a skilled wordsmith and a story teller. He has made this story about people of all classes. The tragedy reverberated throughout the decades for the survivors. Under the skillful writing the horror enfolded and wrapped itself around me. Am I glad I read this? Absolutely! I just need a week or so to recover from the anxiety of the sinking and the grief of the aftermath.

Such a pleasure to hear Janet Wertman read her book about Jane Seymour. This story makes Jane real and not a pale shadow lost to history.
