Surprised Me

At first glance, Rise of the Mages seemed like a madlib of recycled Epic Fantasy tropes, but the further I got, the more I realized that the book undercuts and twists those tropes in exciting ways that really served the fast-paced plot. It started as a 3-star for me and quietly kicked off to a 5-star that I couldn’t stop listening to.
Great narrator. Great book. Can’t wait for the next one.

Excellent book

It starts a little slowly but the characters really pull the emotional story in around 20% and from there it’s great.

Story
At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep. But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain. To his body. He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways. The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked. And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade.

Weird pacing, brilliant anyway

The pacing for this was different from most fantasy stories but it’s such a deeply emotional and powerful story that the pace felt necessary in retrospect. Brilliant

Story
All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first. I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.

An ode to storytelling
Reviewed: 10-04-22
Virdi clearly fell in love with the art of storytelling, the nature of stories and how they change, and what it means to be the one who changes them. With exquisite attention to the beauty of prose and lyricism, Virdi tells not one person’s story, but a whole world’s.
