Story
Incarceration has a long and inglorious history, from dungeons in the bowels of castles to oppressive penal colonies in Australia. Karen Farrington brings this history up to the 21st century, exploring some of the world's worst prisons, from Alcatraz to Pollsmoor, and the unending battles that rage between convicts and warders. Inside the prison walls, gangs rule, guards devise sadistic punishments, and newcomers suffer abuse at the hands of experienced tormentors.

Very informative and heartbreaking.

A captivating audiobook that sheds light on the realities of incarceration around the globe. While the subject matter is undoubtedly harsh, the book's exploration is both informative and thought-provoking.
The narrator's voice draws you into the stories, making the accounts of prison life all the more impactful.
This isn't just a voyeuristic journey into despair. The audiobook doesn't shy away from the difficult aspects of prison life, but it also explores potential solutions and positive stories of resilience. Listeners are left contemplating the role of prisons in society and the possibility for rehabilitation.
"The World's Worst Prisons" is not an easy listen, but it's a necessary one. It's a powerful audiobook that will stay with you long after the final chapter.
I received this audiobook for free from the publisher.

Story
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Good book but amazing narrator.

The book is fantastic. It’s my second Scalzi book who is now one of my favorite authors. But boy oh boy was this narrator amazing. He has the most calming voice, very clear and soothing, and every character sounds unique and real. He’s very talented and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the series read by him before going down a rabbit hole of his work. You can’t lose with this one.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Project Hail Mary: A Stellar Performance Lifts Off
Reviewed: 02-07-24
Buckle up, space nerds, because Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, narrated by the phenomenal Ray Porter, is a mind-blowing trip you won't want to miss. This audiobook rocketed me through a rollercoaster of emotions, from nail-biting suspense to side-splitting laughter, all while leaving me in awe of the vastness of the universe.
The story follows Ryland Grace, an amnesiac astronaut who wakes up on a spaceship hurtling towards a distant star system. With no memory of his mission or even his own name, Ryland must piece together the clues and unravel a global conspiracy to save humanity from an extinction-level threat. Weir's signature blend of science and humor shines throughout, making complex concepts surprisingly accessible and downright entertaining. Prepare to geek out over his realistic portrayal of space travel, alien biology, and innovative problem-solving (though a basic understanding of math and science might be helpful at times).
But the true star of the show is Ray Porter's narration. He masterfully embodies Ryland's journey, capturing his confusion, determination, and moments of self-deprecating wit with perfect pitch. Porter brings the supporting characters to life as well, from the gruff ship AI to the unexpectedly hilarious alien companion. His narration truly elevates the story, making you feel like you're right there with Ryland as he faces the unknown.
Now, no journey is perfect, and Project Hail Mary does have a few bumps along the way. While Weir's scientific explanations are fascinating, they can occasionally bog down the narrative pace. However, these moments are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of this thrilling audiobook.
Overall, Project Hail Mary is a triumph of storytelling, expertly narrated by Ray Porter. It's a captivating blend of science fiction, mystery, and humor that will leave you pondering the universe's possibilities long after the credits roll (or, in this case, the audio stops). So, dust off your spacesuit, strap in, and prepare for an unforgettable ride!
Just a heads-up, space cadets: there might be some equations and scientific jargon that could slow you down. But trust me, they're worth powering through for this stellar adventure!

I love Leslie Jordon, and have been listening to his Hunker Down radio show on Apple Music. He’s a gifted story teller and hilarious man. He mentioned this book in one episode and I immediately purchased it. It’s a shame he is no longer with us but we will always have his stories to give us joy.

Story
Wally Roux is a teenage genius with a big imagination and a big heart, who just moved to Savannah, GA, from Maine with his mom, who adopted him when he was an infant. In this charming and sweet solo performance, Wally investigates what is causing a number of strange events and occurrences. He explores and gets lost within space-time - an infinite, indefinable, and mysterious void that you can’t see but when you slice into it you can feel it.

Boring, annoying storytelling
Reviewed: 08-19-19
The story is short but was a struggle to finish. The main character is an annoying smarty pants that would easily make the front page of /r/imverysmart, a subreddit showcasing people who brag about how smart they are. Most of the story was boring and I tried to return it half way only to find out we cant return originals.
