Heartbreaking and Hopeful
Reviewed: 07-18-20
I am a history major and teacher so I was intrigued to read this book. In my university courses, I had learned about the troubled times of Reconstruction and had heard of the great attempts by those who had been enslaved to find their loved ones. But, I had never heard about the "Lost Friends Column." The tone of the ads that preceded each chapter were heartbreaking and I wondered if each one had ever found those they sought.
The story of Hanie's journey captured me and the narration allowed me to picture her on her odyssey from Louisiana all the way to Texas. Along this journey, she evolved from a sharecropping hand to a woman who evolved to becoming a fierce defender of two women who had much more privilege than she.
As a teacher, I also appreciated Benny's story. She fought her own battle for her students, but it didn't veer off into rescuing them. Instead, she recognized their strengths and the assets of their families and tapped into those.
This story brought me to tears several times. I thought this was an excellent weaving together of the past and present.

Story
November 1958, New York. Into the rarefied atmosphere of wealth and tradition at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden comes the most unlikely of horses—a drab white former plow horse named Snowman—and his rider, Harry de Leyer. They were the longest of all longshots—and their win was the stuff of legend.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, and I just did. This book was so engaging and kept me on the edge of listening during the jumping competition.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Snowman was my favorite character. I loved his open nature, soft eyes, and appreciation for the audience.
What about Bronson Pinchot’s performance did you like?
This was one of the highlights of the book. This performance was well-timed, and never over dramatic. Pinchot had a professional but accessible delivery. I sensed enthusiasm for the story. Very easy to listen to - even with some unnecessary and repetitive information.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This was the fastest I ever finished an audio book.

Story
When it comes to the holidays, no story brings us back to the true spirit of giving like O. Henry’s classic "The Gift of the Magi". So this year we’ve asked some of your favorite Audible narrators—Audie Award winners Katherine Kellgren, Oliver Wyman, and Jonathan Davis—to bring to life this timeless tale, plus two more of O. Henry’s gems: "The Cop and the Anthem" and "The Last Leaf", in this holiday collection.

Story
"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

This was a creepy bunch of tales that were hard to listen to, but hard to put down. I liked the narrators in each story, and I felt that each portrayed the characters well throughout the story. I also liked Stephen King's notes about the how he wants his stories to have a visceral effect on a reader. These certainly did. Horror is not my favorite genre. And I think horror for horror's sake is not worth my time. Finishing this book left me with some things to think about and I think that makes a quality story. It also made the commute to work fly by!
