A mediocre read

I really wanted to like this book; I loved the Before series. This one, unfortunately, lacked spark and excitement. The author over-explained her characters’ thoughts and seemed to be on a quest to throw in as many abilities as possible (they got tedious). The pop culture references also never seemed to fit organically into a story that really never seems to take off.

Story
Joe Goldberg is done with the cities. He’s done with the muck and the posers, done with Love. Now he’s saying hello to nature, to simple pleasures on a cozy island in the Pacific Northwest. For the first time in a long time, he can just breathe. He gets a job at the local library—he does know a thing or two about books—and that’s where he meets her: Mary Kay DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won’t meddle, he will not obsess. He’ll win her the old-fashioned way . . . by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand.

I DO love you

Caroline Kepnes is an absolute literary genius who takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. I am horrified by Joe one moment and he is making me laugh out loud (something that happened multiple times in this book) the next. Cognitive dissonance tugs at me throughout, and I find myself often analyzing my own psyche because I truly love and root for Joe :).
