Too long and too many characters for me
Reviewed: 06-04-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book if you enjoy long, detailed plots. Though I thought I would enjoy this adventurous tale, it was too much for me to chew. There were too many characters and places for me to remember and I found it hard to pay attention to it all and keep track listening. I found myself googling the plot just to understand what was going on and that's when I stopped listening. It would probably be a book I would have to physically read to enjoy so I could pay more attention and easily flip back in the book to reread about character back stories. The narrator for this book was absolutely wonderful though, creating distinct voices for characters, which was a joy to listen to.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I enjoy Agatha Christie and though this isn't my favorite of her books, it was still a fun one to read. The narrator does a nice job of bringing individual voices to the characters. It's great for light reading.

Story
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I couldn't put this one down and finished it in just a few days. There are so many themes running in this book- love, loyalty, regret, independence, and finding meaning in life, and though these can be heavy topics, they don't seem that way. It will make you think about the expectations you have for your own relationships- friends, spouse, children, neighbors and strangers. Can there be kindness left in humanity? The plot synopsis seemed so simple and yet this simple story of a man trying to reconnect with a friend has made me really think about all these topics. And it has a twist to boot! Listen to this one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
