This book is a roller coaster! Did not expect any of what happened! Now it has me thinking 'what if this happened in real life?' So eerie and creepy. Great story.

Meh. Like a slightly spicy Hallmark movie on audio
Reviewed: 08-24-23
It's pretty cheesy. Even by romance standards. I eye rolled no fewer than a dozen times. If you're new to any "spice" and live Hallmark movies, you'll like it. I like my stuff raunchy and very smutty.

Ryder, Garrett, Kenzo, and Diesel - The Vipers. Their deals are as sordid as their business, and their reputation is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, forcing him to beg for mercy. They are not people you mess with, yet my dad did. The old man ran up a debt with them and then sold me to cover his losses. Yes, sold me. They own me now. I’m theirs in every sense of the word. But I’ve never been meek and compliant.

Big recs on tik tok for this book. The male narrator is frustrating sometimes. There are times where he's screaming and for no real reason other than to prove how demented one or more of the characters are I guess? It's very monotonous with the spicy scenes. It's all the same thing. Rough sex, lots of the guys talking about her p***y. Like, okay, we get it. Roxy's story could've been more elaborated. The peak comes quickly and honestly, this book could get away with being half as long. No need to drag it out.

This story was recommended, albeit, came with a strong warming from a favorite of mine on TikTok.
I didn't find it hard to listen.to. It's sad, sure. It's depressing and all, but the imagery is fantastic and the writing is phenomenal. My only complaint is that I feel like it was rushed.

Story
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

So....this was good, not great
Reviewed: 11-12-22
I'll start off by saying what was good about this book...great even. Body horror, super descriptive wording, character development, and overall good visuals.
This book had me in it's clutches, but then the flashbacks got to be so much, it felt heavily relied upon. For good reason at first but then it was just a lot.
Still, I was in, despite the animal torture and experimentation....that was hard to get through at times. The last bit is was made me knock it down a star. I don't want to give spoilers but I don't know why it had to take that turn. It's worth a credit and a listen if just for the great writing.

first time maybe and forever, I'm speechless on my review of a book. this book is beautifully written and wonderfully performed. The subject matter, however, is difficult to digest. The whole situation is sad. there's no two ways about that. And I'm not trying to spoil anything but inevitably that's probably going to happen in this review. We all know that. a 13-year-old person cannot consent to any sexual act. Cannot and should not. that fact never leaves your mind. when you're reading this book. The conundrum comes when you realize that the other party involved truly means no harm, and in fact is so wounded themselves that you actually start to have some empathy for them. It is a very messed up place to be. It tugs at you in every single direction. In some other reviews that I read day had said that this book was glorifying a pedophile and I don't think that's the case. I had my own issues with this person apart from the fact that they were clearly the adult in the situation that involved the child, most having to do with their violent tendencies. there's a lot of problems in this book but given this child's upbringing and what could have happened to her and what could have turned out to be her life, it didn't end nearly as bad as it could have. this will have you questioning things. and wondering what in the hell you just read.

So I understand that when you have an author that writes a series of books, there is a definitive writing style. But there are some severely overused phrases that kind of make me eye roll. again, I love the series and all of that and the writer and everything and all of her other books. but, what is with the black hoodies,"steeled my spine", and dropping the exact artist entitle of what music is playing. It just seems cringy.

The clock at St. Killian’s chimes as whispers float in the dark staircase above. Snow falls from the black sky beyond the windows, and candles glow - the flames lighting up the longest night of the year. Devil’s Night isn’t the only holiday we celebrate. Tonight, we’re pulling on a different mask. Some call it Midwinter. Others call it Yule. We call it Fire Night.

I never minded being locked up. I learned a long time ago that being treated like an animal gives you permission to act like one. Their only mistake is believing anything I do is an accident. I can sit in this house with no internet, television, liquor, or girls, but I'll come out of here with something far more frightening to my enemies. A plan. I just didn't expect one of my enemies to come to me. I can smell her hiding in the house. She's here. Blackchurch houses five prisoners. I'm only one of her problems.

Reviewed: 09-19-22
The female narrator has a pretty grading voice after a while. And the storyline does drag on at times. I found myself just wanting to crack the two main character skulls together. It does pick up pace toward the end after a few chapters of eye rolling and repetitive back and forth between the two main characters. overall, it's a solid book and it's very much so in the vein of Penelope Douglas. So if you've never read any of her books or listen to any of her books before, this is pretty much what it is and if you have then you'll probably like this.
