Story
Simon Schama explores the mysterious contradictions of the Dutch nation that invented itself from the ground up, attained an unprecedented level of affluence, and lived in constant dread of being corrupted by happiness. Drawing on a vast array of period documents and sumptuously reproduced art, Schama recreates in precise detail a nation's mental state. He tells of bloody uprisings and beached whales, of the cult of hygiene and the plague of tobacco, of thrifty housewives and profligate tulip-speculators.

AN ABSOLUTE LISTEN
Reviewed: 03-27-25
What an amazing book. It is history at its best.
The author covers everything regarding Dutch life and mentality through the ages.
I grew up in Holland in the late 1940’s to the mid 1950’s, my teenage years.
The description and the mentality of the Dutch are spot on.
I don’t want to go into details, just that I highly recommend listening.
The Dutch have a great sense of humor, often not understood/ appreciated by Americans.
The narrator, Mike Cooper, does an amazing job pronouncing the Dutch words.
It is not an easy language to speak.
I am so sorry that it came to an end.
I have listened to other books by Simon Schama and will continue to do so in the future.
My thanks to all involved, JK

This is a very interesting part of history.
I have read many books about colonialism and this book throws a different light on the history there of.
There is a good side to colonialism, although sometimes difficult to accept.
It is in the nature of men to conquer and rule.
I highly recommend listening.
The author is exceptional and throws a light on the two different sides.
The narrator, mr. Jonathan Davis is such a pleasure to listen to.

Empires of the Sea tells the story of the 50-year world war between Islam and Christianity for the Mediterranean: one of the fiercest and most influential contests in European history. It traces events from the appearance on the world stage of Suleiman the Magnificent through "the years of devastation" when it seemed possible that Islam might master the whole sea, to the final brief flourishing of a united Christendom in 1571.

Story
In 1908, near Folsom, New Mexico, a cowboy discovered the remains of a herd of extinct giant bison. By examining flint points embedded in the bones, archeologists later determined that a band of humans had killed and butchered the animals 12,450 years ago. This discovery vastly expanded America's known human history but also revealed the long-standing danger Homo sapiens presented to the continent's evolutionary richness. Distinguished scholar Dan Flores's ambitious history chronicles the epoch in which humans and animals have coexisted in the "wild new world" of North America.

It is difficult to write a review on this book.
The time and research of the material covered is good.
I listened to most of it.
Will try to find an other book on the same subject.
I had to give up well past half of the book.
Could not listen to the narrator any longer.
I have to say that the author is good, sad that there was not a better choice of narrator.
The subject matter is very important for all to be aware of. JK

Again I finished a book by Barry Lopez and narrated by him.
His books are absolutely unmatched.
This one narrated by himself, interspersed with Native American flute music, which in itself is so beautiful and such an art.
I have a flute myself and love to play, although not near as good as I wish.
Needless to say that I HIGHLY recommend listening.
