Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Heartbreaking. Powerfully moving. Magnificent on all levels. An extraordinary saga of fundamentalism, domestic abuse, home schooling life in rural Mormon Utah, the quest for knowledge....Transcendent. Breathtakingly poignant. This woman is a GREAT writer with an amazing mind and heart!

Loved Every Minute of It

If you love show biz, vaudeville, show biz bios, a wonderful life story told with charming wit, great insider details, and a lilting and lyrical je ne sais quoi, you will adore this book as I did. Perhaps one of my all time faves. There's even a wonderfully detailed, albeit sad, afterward by her son. I was enthralled. Everything I love in a memoir is here and then some.
A couple of noticeable defects: Meow Meow is exceptional but there are at least 6 words completely and flagrantly mispronounced. Really surprised the producer or editor did not catch. A revolving stage was revolting and patent leather shoes were payton....and on.
The book stops very early in her life and skips over her marriages, most aspects of any of her intimate relationships, except her mother and sister, her Hollywood chapter and the end of her life....Really wish someone would expand.
Would love for her son to go on longer.
More please! Who knew Gypsy Rose Lee was so intellectually brilliant and a mesmerizing show biz story-teller, like non other. Really captures that world and the behind-the-scenes of that world adroitly in a way that completely captures your attention for all 14.5 plus hours! So worth it.

Open, Honest, Sentimental... not quite as Intimate

Surprisingly Smart, Insightful, Delectable....

Rob's second book turns out to be not only highly intelligent but is delivered with exquisite timing, precisely placed humor, together with an impressive arsenal of nearly miraculous impressions and sound affects delivered by the author, It is filled with pretty compelling acting tips big heart and quite moving and revealing backstories about Hollywood, family lineage, children, fatherhood, insider access, some great basketball parlance and more . I loved both Lowe books and learned a tremendous amount about so many things including the acting process, working with certain great directors, what makes a great manager (passion, generosity, innocence), the values, risks and adventurous spirit that inform a meaningful life and delicious behind the scenes anecdotes presented with humanity, adept, adroit wit and precise humor - served up with humility, emotion, as well as highest caliber writing skill and insight. Loved Rob's son's original musical composition that begins and ends this terrific delivery - on so many levels.! Both books are fully engaging and gratifying and worth every moment of listenship and lessons from the trenches!

Story
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Amazing Narration-Compelling, Edgy Coming of Age
Reviewed: 01-29-20
The narration by David Pittu of this wild thriller/edgy coming of age and loss saga is among the most extraordinary I have encountered. "Couldn't put it down." The twists and turns of this shocking coming of age epic mesmerized. I had Alexa Echo Dot read me to sleep every night. Quite the sojourn: rich tapestry of drug addled, sometimes hilarious, other times hallucinogenic writing, dialog, relationships, completely unique characters and a wild plot from the pen of Donna Tartt. The characters become the friends you cannot forget! Boris - come back! Locations that permeate your consciousness. INCREDIBLE narration - David Pittu is the man! He creates pitch perfect full blown, nuanced male and female characterizations, precise emotive accents that run the gamut - unparalleled. I missed big swaths of this plot including the ending because I fell asleep. New to audiobooks, there MUST be away to rewind, mustn't there??!!!
I think the best bits were the very beginning and the very end.....but lots of goodies throughout.
