Story
The Last Stand of Fox Company is a fast-paced and gripping account of heroism and self-sacrifice in the face of impossible odds. The authors have conducted dozens of firsthand interviews with the battle's survivors, and they narrate the story with the immediacy of such classic accounts of single battles as Guadalcanal Diary, Pork Chop Hill, and Black Hawk Down.

A story of almost too much intensity. The brutality of both the cold and the combat is breathtaking in its realism. Not for the fainthearted but surely the battle for Fox Hill is one of the classic war stories of all time.

Story
In 1942, the island of Malta was the most heavily bombed place on earth. Its submarine and air attacks on Axis supply convoys were all that kept Rommel from marching across North Africa. But Malta was out of fuel. Operation Pedestal was Malta's last hope, a giant convoy with more that 50 warships escorting 13 freighters and one life-or-death oil tanker, the SS Ohio. It was bombed, torpedoed, and abandoned, but two American Merchant Mariners boarded the ship and repaired the guns.

Story
Caesar Augustus has been called history's greatest emperor. It was said he found Rome made of clay and left it made of marble. With a senator for a father and Julius Caesar for a great-uncle, he ascended the ranks of Roman society with breathtaking speed. His courage in battle is still questioned yet his political savvy was second to none. He had a lifelong rival in Mark Antony and a 51-year companion in his wife, Livia. And his influence extended perhaps further than that of any ruler who has ever lived.

Excellent story
Reviewed: 04-08-07
If Augustus did not did not exist, a novelist would have had to invent him. A truly extraordinary life. The book is far more detailed on his rise to power than his life as the creator of the Rome the movies have made familiar to generations of fans. In part that may be a result of the extraordinary power Augustus exerted over the history of Rome once he was the last man standing when Anthony died. All in all, a great adventure!

Story
Armed with unprecedented access to Edison's workshop diaries, notebooks, and letters, Israel brings fresh insights into how the inventor's creative mind worked. For the first time, much attention is devoted to his early family life in Ohio and Michigan, where the young Edison honed his entrepreneurial sense and eye for innovation as a newsstand owner and editor of a weekly newspaper. These experiences underscore the inventor's later successes with new resonance and pathos.

Technical Background Needed
Reviewed: 01-04-07
Although the story of Edison is certainly fascinating, this book has extremely technical and detailed sections concerning the numerous (sometimes thousands) of experiments Edison completed before finding an acceptable solution to the many problems he endeavored to solve throughout his life. At times it can become mind numbing unless the listener is really interested in the process of inventing rather than the end result.

Story
At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Theodore Mason was sent to his battlestation on USS California's open maintop. There, he had a front-row view of the air raid. The story of that day is just one of the many exciting tales that fill his memoir, a fascinating look at life below decks in the "Battleship Navy" of the 1940s. Battleship Sailor is both an extraordinary social history and a fascinating personal account of the war in the Pacific.

A lucid and fascinating insight from an enlisted man's prespective of the final years of the Battleship Navy. Soon to be replaced by the carrier, but blissfully unaware, the Navy of pre Pearl Harbor is shown. warts and all, by a very perceptive young man.

Remarkable Journey by A Remarkable Man
Reviewed: 09-06-05
No doubt American history is teeming with individuals who have virtually disappeared from history books but at one glorious moment held the nation in awe of their achievements. "General" Eaton was certainly one of those characters. This is his story. Although the author has an affinity for wandering off the subject to fill in some rather trivial details, it is Eaton's story and his alone that makes this a worthwhile listen.
