Story
Aging Herb’s charmed life with his dear wife, Susan, in their Key West house is coming undone. Susan now needs constant care, and Herb is in denial about his own ailing health. The one bright spot is the arrival of an endlessly optimistic manicurist calling herself Renee. She sings to Susan during manicures, gets her to paint, and brings her a sense of contentment. But then Herb and Susan’s adult children arrive to stage an intervention on their stubborn, independent father, and as a consequence, Renee’s gig with Susan—and her grand plans for her own life—start to unravel as well.

Great storytelling!

A Lee Smith masterpiece! Silver Linings is told from several different perspectives, but super easy to follow on Audible. The narrators voice is perfect. It made me laugh out loud a few times, although it certainly explores some very serious modern day issues. It also made me want to go to Key West! The only reason for 4 stars is a rather abrupt ending. I really craved more of the story in the end.

Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Pam Martin. This book is one of the most compelling stories I have read in recent years. The main character, Demon, will live in my head for a long, long time. Artistically told, and staying true to the spirit of the original inspiration, Demon Copperhead has left me feeling tearful, yet hopeful. I am sad to have ended it. Great narration too!

Story
Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping his family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up.

This is my favorite Tana French novel yet! It's more character and family driven than police procedure driven! I hardly ever give a book 5 stars, but this one is worthy!

Story
It is 1940 and a tragedy sends Lou and her little brother, Oz, along with their invalid mother, from New York City to the rugged mountains of Southwest Virginia to live with their great-grandmother. The story is told with both heartbreaking elegance and large doses of touching humor as the lives of Lou and Oz are changed forever.

Well Intended but.,,

As a woman born and bred in Southwest Virginia, whose father was a coal miner, I really wanted to like this book. The overall message of the story and the intention of Baldacci to memorialize his family history is admirable. He represents the conflict between the natural resource companies and the people who they exploit and are left to deal with the spoils of mineral extraction accurately and passionately. So that's good. One issue with this reading is the pronunciation of "Appalachian" as "App - a - LAY - chan". This pronunciation is incorrect and an affront to those of us who have ancestors that settled the area and have lived there for years. We have said "Appalachia" and others have no right to change it. Think about how disrespectful it would be to suddenly start pronouncing Cherokee as "SHer - o - kee" or Schenectady, NY as "Sche - NEEK - tady". Saying AppaLAYchan does not illustrate one's education, only that one is, at best, ignorant, or,
at worst, does not care. Other blatant issues include a crow circling on warm air currents and a friendly Panther who had black skin. I just wish Mr. Baldacci had gotten feedback from someone who was born and raised in the deep mountains of SW Va. to more accurately portray the culture and natural history. ~ A Coal Miners Daughter.
