An indispensable perspective on World War I. Everyone knows the history of the Western Front, but little of the Eastern Front that triggered the war. This well written book redresses the imbalance. The Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy was more than the buffoon so often depicted in Western histories.

This is one of the best and most important books ever written. Judt is a polymath. The first member of his family to finish
