An excellent book

I absolutely loved this one. I honestly can't believe this book only has a little over 100 reviews right now. If you enjoy war stories this one is for you. The author did an excellent job developing the main character, and this book is far from just a long series of violent events. He made me feel like I really knew the man he wrote about and witnessed the way the war changed him first hand.

Story
England, 1346: For Thomas Blackstone, the choice is easy - dance on the end of a rope for a murder he did not commit, or take up his war bow and join the king's invasion of France. As he fights his way across Northern France, Blackstone will learn the brutal lessons of war - from the terror and confusion of his first taste of combat, to the savage realities of siege warfare. Vastly outnumbered, Edward III's army will finally confront the armored might of the French nobility on the field of Crecy.

if you enjoy violent historical fiction you'll love this as much as I did. there is a slow point in the middle of the book that got a little old after a while but it's critical to the story as a whole so I couldn't be upset about it. the narrator is excellent and the character building is as well. altogether it was great and I'm excited for the rest.

Story
Every modern city has one week’s worth of food to feed itself. Then it will collapse. Cut off the resources to New York, Sydney, or even a mid-size metropolis, and millions will soon starve. In Zero Day Code we see those immense and open, hyper-complex, networked supercities of the new millennium die. And in the last moments we see their vengeance take form as all the best and worst traits of humanity bubble to the surface.

Lots of doom and gloom, but if that's what you're into they're great. Birmingham did a ton of research for this one, and it will definitely make you think.

Story
Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet in the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Some are lured there by the prospect of fortune or fame; others come simply for the thrill of the fight. The games continue for days, until a champion is crowned—or all involved perish. When it becomes clear that to be a Free Trained pit fighter is to live with a mark on one’s head, four warriors struggle to change their lot, both in and out of the arena. But that’s easier said than done, and not everyone is pleased to learn of their plans.

very well written book. great from start to finish. lots of violence, but with plenty of humour and character development in between to keep it from getting to dark.
