The story is famous and a classic, so I won't waste words saying what others have already said. I'll limit my review to Andy Serkis' reading. Astonishingly good! Fantastic, rich voice with a broad range and acting chops aplenty to give each character both a rich voice and personality. As a bonus, he manages to sound much like the actors playing in Jackson's films. His reading is much too intense for my 5-year old--the voices he gives the trolls, goblins, wolves, and dragon would terrify them and give them nightmares--but of course that makes it all the better for older readers. Incredible performance!

Carolyn Spring is one of my favorite voices on trauma and recovery. I've read all her books and am excited to find her doing a podcast available on audible! It seems she hasn't really been "discovered" by her audience yet, but she deserves to be, and will be if she keeps at it. Thank you for all you do, Carolyn!

I really wanted to like this and learn more from it, but in the end, I have to say that I find it at best far too hard to follow. It isn't that I'm stupid or unprepared, I hope. My interdisciplinary PhD crosses both of the fields involved herein--philosophy and religious studies--and I've been wrestling with the meaning of life all my adult life (I'm 53). I first thought that I was merely too distracted for the complex subject matter, that I couldn't do housework and get anything out of this course at the same time. But when I slowed down and started to use the back button to re-listen and re-listen again (and sometimes again and again) to passages I didn't get the first time through, I found the lecturer speaking in frequently (usually?) ungrammatical Kantian sentences (as in very long and labyrinthine things with many qualifications and asides)-- apparently off the top of his head. And when I tried during those repeated listenings to subdivide his run-ons, complete his fragments, and birth his unborn thoughts, I found that I often still couldn't understand him. I wish I could say I'm sure the speaker knows his material and has important things to share with those willing to take the time to listen very, very carefully, but how would I know? Judging from this course, The Teaching Company needs to work harder to ensure that its lecturers deliver good content in a way that is suited to the manner in which its customers are likely to approach the material: i.e., while driving, washing dishes, working a factory job, etc.

I'm extremely happy with how the material is organized: from most to least common words. The text seems well and clearly articulated in both languages, and the example sentences apparently include vocab not counted in the 3000 indicated by the subtitle--which is a LOT of material. The only real complaint I have is that a small amount of the material is of no value whatsoever. (For example, at about halfway through Chapter 6, the proper names Jake and Bill are, absurdly, both included as Dutch words and translated into English as Jake and Bill--no kidding! And, uh, still crazier, the end of Chapter 9 provides a translation for "uh"! Perhaps the subtitle should boast of only, say, 2970 Dutch words in context.) I give the book a perfect score in every category, though I'd take a half star off "story" for the wee bit of utterly worthless material, if I could. I have questions about some of the translations, but I'm not well qualified to evaluate. IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A PDF WORD LIST!

The reader did a wonderful job, especially with the Hooinym (sp?) portions. Brilliant! And I found this classic more engaging than I'd expected.

This one hit close to home--so close I have to think O'Connor must have known the interminable struggle of which she wrote. Raised by evangelical Calvinists as I was, I can relate somewhat. Powerful story. And a terrific reader too. Highly recommended.

I know it's a classic, but I found it rather too quaint for my taste. I listened to it in preparation for Geraldine Brooks' Pulizer Prize-winning novel, March, however, and I'm very glad I did, as my reading of the latter was much improved thereby. Sandra Burr's performance was perfect.
