Story
Based upon the premise that mankind experienced virtually zero economic growth from the dawn of time until 1820, this provocative, big-picture book identifies the four conditions necessary for sustained economic progress - property rights, scientific rationalism, capital markets, and communications and transportation technology - and then analyzes their gradual appearance and impact throughout every corner of the globe.

The Audible version deletes significant sections of Bernstein’s original. That is disappointing. At the end it tells you it is “based upon” the book. Misleading at best.

Story
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.

A literary masterpiece, artfully narrated.

I have read many histories of the American Civil War, but none as well-written or as richly narrated as this three volume series by Shelby Foote. The narration is superb and captures the essence of the written word. Enjoy.
