Disjointed, disappointing
Reviewed: 01-07-24
The narrative strategy used by the author jumped between timelines with little transition. The descriptions of internal thoughts and feeling read far more like fiction than a true crime story.
Hoped to love it but was left wanting more factual detail and less bodice-ripping.

I really liked the beginning of the story, but halfway through it started getting all about manipulation for corruption. I personally just love books that make you laugh and I didn’t think it had as much of that as I would have liked. But if you’re into Sci-fi, this is for you.

Esther Gold loves Halloween more than anything in the world. So she is determined to go trick-or-treating again this year despite the fact that her parents think she is officially too old. Esther has it all planned out, from her costume to her candy-collecting strategy. But when the night rolls around, something feels...off. No one is answering their door. The moon is an unnatural shade of orange. Strange children wander the streets, wearing creepy costumes that might not be costumes at all.

Really sad

I looked at the reviews for this book and was really excited… and it was good… at the start, and then it all just got weird. The entire end of the book was just about change, no good characters, no actually scary elements, just “This girl never hated change before and now she actually did and she has to like it!” And kiss her best friend, because no story has is complete without romance. Just not that great.

Claire has absolutely no interest in the paranormal. She's a scientist, which is why she can't think of anything worse than having to help out her dad on one of his ghost-themed Chicago bus tours. She thinks she's made it through when she sees a boy with a sad face and dark eyes at the back of the bus. There's something off about his presence, especially because when she checks at the end of the tour...he's gone.
