Story
The history of colonial America is a story of extraordinary scope, with Europeans, Africans, and the native peoples of North America interacting in a drama of settlement and conflict that lasted nearly three centuries. Go back in time and relive this epic story in 36 spellbinding lectures. While concentrating on British North America, Professor Allison also covers developments in the colonial outposts of Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the all-important British possessions in the West Indies, which were the source of the most lucrative crop in the New World - sugar - and the reason for the enormous growth in the slave trade.

Tired of the colonizer narrative
Reviewed: 03-10-19
He keeps explaining Native American and West African deaths in percentages and economics, while describing the death rate of slave-running, genocide-committing English in the Barbados as "horrifying" and "devastating."
In general, he always takes the side of the white men who raped, pillaged, and systematically oppressed whenever possible.
The details of the Anne Hutchinson trial were botched, as well.

Story
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.

Story
Few stories contain heroism, betrayal, ricocheting monarchs, bold stands against repressive authorities, and redemption like this one. And fewer generations have modeled commitment to the gospel and the application of God's Word like the Puritans of England. In this 12-part series, Dr. Michael Reeves surveys Puritan theology and the work of the Holy Spirit when the Reformation flourished in England.

I still found it interesting, and it filled in some important gaps in my understanding of the time and the movement.

Story
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

Great story, but it was irreparably marred by the childish diction and obvious confusion of the reader.
Mispronouncing Spanish words is irritating, but understandable, in an English audio book. But they could at least have gone to the trouble of finding a narrator who speaks English.

Story
In a work that fundamentally recasts the history of colonial America, Wendy Warren shows how the institution of slavery was inexorably linked with the first century of English colonization of New England. While most histories of slavery in early America confine themselves to the Southern colonies and the Caribbean, New England Bound forcefully widens the historical aperture to include the entirety of English North America.

What disappointed you about New England Bound?
The writing is painful. Quit trying to sound fancy - just tell the damn story.
What was most disappointing about Wendy Warren’s story?
You can write about slavery without re-assuring everyone every other sentence that you think it's deplorable. GEEZ, enough already with the moralizing. It's supposed to be a history book, not a Sunday school lesson.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
So dramatic. Gag.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from New England Bound?
All of it.
Any additional comments?
I wish I had a physical copy so I could burn it.

Something as ordinary as hanging clothes on a clothesline becomes an act of devotion if we pay attention to what we are doing and take time to attend to the sights, smells, and sounds around us.
