The truth, stood out the most. No wonder grandparents keep silent. My grandparents also suffered. They were Irish, fleeing starvation. Later, my grandfather"s grocery store was burned down. This in spite of his helping those suffering during the "Great War".

Story
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

The book Horse: A Transformative Experience
Reviewed: 02-10-24
l admired the author's writing, as she descibed 3 different time periods -- each with different characters with such complete understanding.
Additionally, l identified deeply with the love and understanding of the bond between humans and horses. She did this so aptly.
As prey animals, horses are very different than our pets. Dogs and cats are predators.
The horse and humans can bond deeply if we can approach them as whisperers. When that deep
bond happens it is magical!

In the cold grey waters of the North Atlantic wolfpacks of enemy U boats hunted down with ruthless efficiency the supply lines that could keep Britain in the war. Through the year the enemy produced many of their grandest victories but Britain was able to stabilise its position in the Middle East although setbacks at the hands of the newly arrived Rommel, the Desert Fox, were encountered in North Africa.

Churchill: A Hero of Freedom
Reviewed: 06-26-22
A thrilling read. One filled with the actual costs of keeping our nations' democracy. Courage, sacrifice and determination is experienced in this audible tome. A distinguished orator, Churchill never lied to his people, yet helped them make them determined to prevail.
He lauds those that became Britain's allies, the King, parliament and citizenry. He chose leaders that criticized him as well as his supporters to stratigize Britain's war.
This six volume account is breathtaking, glorious and revealing. How fortunate we are to have had Winston Churchill as the free world's leader!

Story
Angela Merkel has always been an outsider. A pastor’s daughter raised in Soviet-controlled East Germany, she spent her twenties working as a research chemist, entering politics only after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And yet within fifteen years, she had become chancellor of Germany and, before long, the unofficial leader of the West. In this “masterpiece of discernment and insight” (The New York Times Book Review), acclaimed biographer Kati Marton sets out to pierce the mystery of Merkel’s unlikely ascent.

Story
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

I love mysteries. This was not one l liked. Besides needing a better editor, it had too many characters. Then the story wanders off into the weeds...interminally. Just go to the end. Some satisfaction there.
Life is short, read something else. This one is a huge waste of time!

The Unbreakable Child, a story about forgiving the unforgivable, is a riveting journey inside the secretive underbelly of the St. Thomas / St. Vincent Orphan Asylum in rural Kentucky. The Map Thief is riveting. The facts are made more understandable through an examination of the motives of the main character. All too human, if despicable, his is psychological justifications for his crimes are believable.
The book is one that deserves acclaim. One I certainly will not forget.
