Really liked this book
Reviewed: 10-26-19
Some of the reviews I read prior to purchasing the book complained that the main character was so stupid that the reviews did not like the book and couldn’t finish it. I disagree, the protagonist explained that the woman was his very first real and intense love. His failure to recognize some obvious clues to what was taking place in his life was his overwhelming hope for a resolution. It was his traumatic loss and hope that clouded his perspective not stupidity.
I enjoyed this book. The plot was especially interesting and kept me interested throughout the story.

Story
Meg's grandfather has been booked to give lectures on a cruise as part of the education/entertainment itinerary, and he's arranged for a passel of family members to join him. The passengers’ vacation quickly becomes a nightmare when they wake up to find themselves broken down and in need of repairs. Things get even worse when a crew member announces to all that a woman has jumped overboard, leaving behind her shoes, shawl, and a note. The note reveals she's a disliked member of a writers' group onboard for a retreat, and the group is split on whether this is in-character for her.

Most disappointing Meg Langslow story
Reviewed: 10-08-19
Donna Andrews. Terns of Endearment
We select mystery stories for different reasons. I certainly look for a good mystery but the relationships among the characters is as important. I have listen to seventeen or eighteen Meg Langslow books. They are typically quite charming in a quirky way. The descriptions of her family are especially engaging and leading me often to wish I were a member of that fictional family. Especially amazing is how Bernadette Dunne skillfully keeps the voices of the many family members distinctive.
The best of her books are, The Good, The Bad and The Emus, Some Like It Hawk and The Nightingale Before Christmas. I have listened each of to these more than once. There have been some books that were not up to the standards of the above books such as Revenge of the Wrought-Iron Flamingos, Cockatiels at Seven and How the Finch Stole Christmas. I would not recommend any of these.
Most recently I purchased Terns of Endearment. Meg and her family are aboard a cruise ship curtesy of Meg’s grandfather, who has been scheduled for a series of lectures on various aspects of wildlife. Tragically, the ship has become stalled somewhere on its way to Bermuda. There are increasingly limited resources like food and power, connection to the internet and services from the cruise staff. The story is dreary and depressing without any of the quirky circumstances more typical of Andrews’s stories. The plot, as far as I got is not interesting . This is the only Donna Andrews books I could not finish.
I certainly will try another book because I have enjoyed so many..

Story
Melissa is delighted when she’s asked to help put on a play at her favorite local Cotswolds hotel. There’s nothing she loves more than getting to know the cast, who are just as colorful behind the scenes as they are onstage. Rehearsals are running smoothly until the perpetually grumpy supporting actor is found spread-eagle at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs leading to a cellar. As Melissa tries in vain to save his life, she is sure she can hear voices nearby and suspects there is more to this accident than meets the eye.

Didn’t care for the narrator.
Reviewed: 06-08-19
I understand that this series and the narrator are very highly rated. However, I am sorry but I did not care for the narrator. At times I had difficulty understanding her. She has a low voice and she often seems to have low energy which makes her difficult to comprehend.

This early novel show how much Donna Andrews has improved over time. It is just not very good. The charachers that I know so well are still undeveloped. The plot is pretty weak. I have loved all but one of her other books. I won't read any more of the early ones.

I love Donna Andrews’ books. This was about my favorite - comparable for me with Some Like it Hawk. I was surprised by most of the ending and and always entertained but the story and humor. Meg’s grandfather recruit and army of devotees to rescue emus from an area around a small town. These is a secondary motivation to learned about Meg’s grandmother life and who in the town. As always, Bernadette Dunn is excellent.

Story
Lobelia Falls was abuzz about the Scottsbeck drama competition. The Grub-and-Stake Gardening and Roving Club intended to win it with a dramatization of "The Shooting Of Dan McGrew". The house lights went down, the footlights went up... and someone tried to make opening night the leading man's final curtain! To keep the villain from stealing the show, Dittany Monk quickly switched from her onstage part as the "tiny tot" to her role as wily sleuth. Now the hunt was on for a would-be murderer with a taste for melodrama.

Over the The Top Silly
Reviewed: 11-12-16
Would you try another book from Charlotte MacLeod and/or Lory Reyes?
I have read all the Peter Shandy books by Charlotte MacLeod, some more than once, and some of the Sarah Kelling books. This one was not in that league. I will not try another Grub-and-Stakers book nor will I select another by that narrator.
What was most disappointing about Charlotte MacLeod’s story?
I could not develop an interest in any of the many characters nor did I care about who was behind the attempts to murder. Some parts were humerous but most were just silly. I just could not get involved in much of the story.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I did not care for the narration. Her defects likely were mostly the result of the story. It would be a challenge to present all of the characters with their unusal names. She did have clear separation between the characters even when many were interacting together. I would not have made the voice selections she did for some of the characters. There were w few times when I thought that she too was not interested in the story.
Was The Grub-and-Stakers Pinch a Poke worth the listening time?
I can certainly understand that some will like the book, however it was not worth the time for me.

Would you listen to Louisiana Longshot again? Why?
No, but there are only a very few books that I listen to more than once. But I enjoyed the book and its quirky characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked both the members of the sinful mafia. I liked the power, skill and control that those two excreted over the town.
Which scene was your favorite?
The final climatic scene when Fortune broke up the hostage of the women.
Any additional comments?
I like the book. Narrator was on point and the story was entering..

Meg Langslow is plying her blacksmith's trade at Caerphilly Days, a festival inspired by the town's sudden notoriety as "The Town That Mortgaged Its Jail". The lender has foreclosed on all Caerphilly's public buildings, and all employees have evacuated - except one. Phineas Throckmorton, town clerk, has been barricaded in the courthouse basement for over a year. But the lender seems increasingly determined to evict him, and may succeed after one of its executives is found shot, apparently from inside the basement.

An "evil lender" has taken control of the town and threats loom for the loss of Meg's home. The county clerk is barricaded in the basement of the court house. Only select members of the town know how he has been able to survive there for the past year. My enjoyment of the book was strongly dependent on the considerable skills of Bernadette Dunne.

An intricate plot with several important characters. Like all Westlake novels each of the chartered has separate and sometimes conflicting motivations. In the end it all comes together to the benefit of Dortmunder and his crew and to the detriment of the antagonists.
The narrator so clearly represented each of the characters clearly expressing their personalities with his voice.

What did you like best about Just One Damned Thing After Another? What did you like least?
Expectations raised in the earlier part of the book. The potential for the characters to experience the discovery of first hand observations of great historical events and locations. The book is severely depleted by the descriptions of armed conflict with marauders from the future.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was okay.
