Story
The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

Amazing Storytelling Experience
Reviewed: 02-01-24
Grover Gardner is probably the best narrator I have listened to so far. It sounds like he's recalling this all from memory and telling it around a campfire. Knows exactly what, where, and when to emphasize for maximum impact and gives a lot of color or what otherwise might have been a much dryer listen.

Not really for everyone
Reviewed: 11-09-23
The book has an interesting topic, and it was free with my Audible subscription, so I gave it a listen. I'm on a job search, so imposter syndrome is pretty strong right now, and I was hoping for some ways to cope or redirect those negative energies.
What I got instead was a two hour lecture on how, because I'm a white male, my imposter syndrome is somehow less impactful than it is to everyone else. It certainly doesn't feel any less horrible when I experience it in an interview, but the author almost goes out of her way to make sure she mentions every group of people instead of white males.
Unfortunately, this basically just exacerbated my imposter syndrome even further; and so this book was not only not helpful, it didn't really make any inclusions for my sake so in reality it was regression toward my goal.
I do not recommend it personally for people like myself, but other people may be interested in some of the messages it conveys

Inferno: Thirty-five year old Dante finds himself in the middle of a dark wood, in extreme personal and spiritual crisis. I already loved this book, but this telling of it was fantastic. The non verbal atmosphere and all the narrators acting was beautifully presented.

Story
On New Year's Eve in 2012, Matthew Schrier was headed home from Syria, where he'd been photographing the country's civil war. Just 45 minutes from the safety of the Turkish border, he was taken prisoner by the al-Nusra Front. Over the next seven months he would endure torture and near starvation in six brutal terrorist prisons. And, eventually, he would escape. In this gripping, raw, and surprisingly funny memoir, Schrier details the horrifying and frequently surreal experience of being a slight, wisecracking Jewish guy held captive by the world's most violent Islamic extremists.

It’s a breakdown of one’s humanity

An Amazing Tapestry

This is my first review here, and I am glad to write it. This book was incredible. The narrator is easily one of the best of the whole site. The emotion, the accents he uses, the natural way he reads the story overall like it was coming out of his own experiences was very touching.
The rich mixture of feelings the reader/listeners go through was masterfully crafted between Matthew Schrier's story and Michael Axtells voice acting. I read and listen to a lot of POW and capture accounts and they're always really interesting but they only really bring you through all the terrible stuff they went through. In The Dawn Prayer, Schriers account has multiple places where humanity bleeds through and really shows both mans inhumanity to man, but it also contains a pretty good amount of humor which is something that is very rare for accounts like this.
One of the best books I've ever gone through.
