It is hard to review something this complex and yet it tells us that the early times in our world were not exactly as we were led to believe in school, if they covered the topic at all. I think this is useful for business leaders and political leaders but probably will not be read by either one

This is a quick overview of a national tragedy and should be read by all students in high school or college. He does a great job of making it seem relevant and interesting while covering political, social, religious and human factors that make up any nation, but get magnified in times of war.

Story
How did a boy from small-town New York become the world’s most successful writer? How does he do it? He has always wanted to write the kind of novel that would be read and reread so many times that the binding breaks and the book literally falls apart. As he says, “I’m still working on that one.”

I felt his reading his own book was nice. His life is not at all what I had imagined. And his personal luck, tragedies and business success are all very interesting, but I haven't figured how to apply them to my life. But others might.
I would put this down as more of a fun read than most, but having nothing terribly lasting as a take-away -- at least for me. Maybe I will change my mind later.

General Sherman's 1864 burning of Atlanta solidified his legacy as a ruthless leader. Yet Sherman proved far more complex than his legendary military tactics reveal. James Lee McDonough offers fresh insight into a man tormented by the fear that history would pass him by, who was plagued by personal debts, and who lived much of his life separated from his family.

This is an outstanding book that is still current

The book is much better than I expected. Sherman did more, and was more important to America's history than I thought. This book covers far more than just the war, it covers human and marriage conflict, religion, and how to lead other people to do necessary things, with a single mindedness when that is necessary. A war that should never have been fought, costing 600,000 lives of young men America needed to have families and children for our future -- all ruined. It should make us think about the present war in Ukraine, another that should NOT be fought. People are never at war with other people, only leaders at war with other leaders. We need to remember that. Wars are started by a few, who almost never risk their own lives and fortunes, just those who are forced to do their bidding.

John is a great speaker and tells a wonderful story of his early life and how it led to politics and ultimately to great power over the US House of Representatives. I enjoyed the audio, how it was done kept my interest the entire way. I think every elected official should read this book, and learn what the two party system should be all about. Compromise, and communicating with each other for the good of the entire country. I wish John was back in Congress, we need 400 "Johns" today, we have a political tragedy going on in Congress today, IMO. The two parties are no longer communicating and civil to one another, John had it right, today's elected officials need to take note of this book.

Beyond Good, This Is Timely And Excellent Info
Reviewed: 07-29-22
This book is a milestone for me, I quote it all the time. We have seen a succession of these Strongmen who have done much damage to our world. And we have several doing it now, and there are more in the wings who would like to be like the worst leaders in this book. The author shows us the pattern these rulers use to get power, and then keep it. And how they have evolved the standard system to meet new conditions like social media. They have also figured out how to suppress the media if they can not buy it and turn it into total propaganda for them. In spite of limitations they are trying, and this worries me greatly. Again, I think all elected officials should be required to read this book. Unfortunately the bad guys probably DO read it, and get coaching from it on how to get away with crimes against their citizens. A must read for anyone interested in understanding the worst of the world's autocrat5ic politicians, and out and out dictators. Strongmen. Or "want to be" Strongmen.

Great Information on Politics and Journalism

I learned much about life and politics in this book. But the story didn't stick with me as it should have. It moves all over the globe and yet comes back to small town America. I liked it, but I think it is a bit much to tackle in a single book. There are two good books in here. Still, I needed this insight, and enjoyed the book.

Story
Unstoppable is the ultimate immigrant story and an epic David-and-Goliath adventure. While American teens were socializing in ice cream parlors, Siggi was suffering beatings by Nazi hoodlums for being a Jew and was soon deported along with his family to the darkest place the world has ever known: Auschwitz. Siggi used his wits to stay alive, pretending to have trade skills the Nazis could exploit to run the camp. After two death marches and near starvation, he was liberated from camp Mauthausen and went to work for the US Army hunting Nazis.

A Great Story -- Should Get Wider Reading
Reviewed: 07-29-22
At times I felt it was slow, but the story does unfold nicely in the end. It is a bit different from my favorite stories but it was well researched and as a business person I enjoyed the business aspects of it. The moving stories of the concentration camps were so sad, I had to stop listening for a day or so. Not for the faint hearted, but something we all needed to know about in this kind of detail. It should never have happened, but I can see there is room for this to happen again. Leaders in the word are never satisfied, they could easily slip into this kind of horrible suppression of human rights (and lives). But this story is of how one man overcame such hardships, and moved to amazing success. Stick with it to the end, and you won't be disappointed.

David at his best. This was so well researched and told. I wish every politician in America should have to read this book before taking office. Truman was amazing and saved America -- we are what we are because of who he was, and the leadership he took at a critical moment in our history. David does such a good job of holding my interest while going over so many elements of Truman's amazing life and the way he almost accidentally came to power. I highly recommend this book in audio.

I was impressed, I never realized the full story of how this part of the USA was populated, how the land was allocated, and all the health and emotional issues involved. Even to Johnny Appleseed. This should be a must-read to finish high school. There is much to absorb here, but David does it so well, it always stays interesting.
