Story
Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Overhyped?

This is my third King book. I’ve heard a lot of praise towards him and this book in particular. It took me about a month to get through this. It was difficult to keep going. Maybe the message went over my head, maybe I didn’t find everything as interesting as others. I just felt like this story could’ve been told in a fraction of the time instead of being 50+ chapters it could’ve been 10.
My experience with this book is not affected by the movie because I’ve never seen the movie. Though through Internet osmosis over many years, I have an idea of what the movie is about. And that may have created a bias in my head for how the book should go. All in all, I really didn’t know much about it going into it.
The ability of the shining is interesting, but at the same time I feel like the same story I could’ve been told without it. Maybe I’m wrong about that, and understood it differently.
I just caution others who are new to Stephen King. This book is over hyped in my opinion. Best spend your credit somewhere else.

Built from the skulls of fallen generals and demon princes, it is a seat of honor and ancient, powerful magic, keeping the demon corelings at bay. From atop the throne, Ahmann Jardir was meant to conquer the known world, forging its isolated peoples into a unified army to rise up and end the demon war once and for all.
