Story
The Early Middle Ages-the years from A.D. 650 to 1000-were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."

Story
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Interesting, but not great.

I'm a classical nut, so presumably the target demographic. I was really excited by the topic, the idea of telling it from Patroclus' view. I was looking forward to it with open eyes rather than judging it by the impossible standard of the Iliad. The reviews were great, taking about getting lost in the pretty of it. One review even said she's the new Mary Renault. I do not agree. I enjoyed it fit the most part, but constantly found it to flatly prosaic. The hairs never pricked up on the back of my neck, the dopamine never flowed. I don't think she found any new depths of pathos. To better honest, I thought the mostly action scene movie Troy did a better job, but I guess Peter O'toole helps. Anyway, like I said a mildly interesting listen if you have an interest in the topic, but don't go out of your way. I will probably not download Circe, but will be looking for the Mary Renault novels I haven't been through yet.

Story
Ulysses depicts a world that is as fully conceived and vibrant as anything in Homer or Shakespeare. It has been delighting and puzzling readers since it was first published on Joyce's 40th birthday in 1922. And here, Professor Heffernan maps the brilliance, passion, humanity, and humor of Joyce's modern Odyssey in these 24 lectures that finally make a beguiling literary masterpiece accessible for anyone willing to give it a chance.
