I loved the story. Although set in Spain during fascist transition from the Spanish Civil War, it was not political.. just a long story. A little long winded but reminds me a little of Isabel Allende or Thomas Wolfe novels.

The 1968 US presidential election was the young Lawrence O'Donnell's political awakening, and in the decades since it has remained one of his abiding fascinations. For years he has deployed one of America's shrewdest political minds to understanding its dynamics, not just because it is fascinating in itself but because in it is contained the essence of what makes America different and how we got to where we are now.

It strikes me how far we have come from the 1930s and shitty women were treated. I hope we never Make America 1930s again. There should never be shame attached to an unexpected birth. Today most of us have had choice. I fear the way this world deals with unplanned births never returns to 1930s shame. Let's never go backwards.

I enjoyed the book even though it was long. Historical fiction takes you to the time and place of a character to understand a life. This story does that.

Definately a political statement. Same narrative we hear today (68 years later). Should also read the book High Noon..and also the film Trumbo. Same screwed up red scare that we forgot about and do not talk about how many lives were ruined...and brave people with back bone.
