The first novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Roman series. It is 42 AD, and Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. If adjusting to the rigours of military life isn't difficult enough for the bookish young man, he also has to contend with the disgust of his colleagues when, because of his imperial connections, he is appointed a rank above them.

Really captured the small and accurate details of military life, the human aspect that is, that is irrespective of eras, and that really speaks to the authors talent.

Worth every minute! Cried even.

The writing was like that of Bernard Cornwell, as far as research and battle violence. The drama is emotional and both sad and touching.

Confused over a small part of the backstory
Reviewed: 02-18-24
The only complaint I have is that I am not sure of the Jesus or “j’hashua” mentioned in the backstory is meant to be the actual Jesus, or one of the off-shoot messianic figures that cropped up in history. The reason it confuses me is if it’s really meant to be Jesus, then Scarrow needs to read the Bible again. The things he claims that Jesus taught is way off the mark, such as that his whole purpose was to liberate Israel from the Romans. That is what the Jews THOUGHT He was supposed to do, they didn’t see that what He was doing was so much bigger than Rome vs Israel. Anyway, small complaint, the story is still STELLAR and the performance is outstanding. Well worth listening

Books involving naval warfare are difficult to write well, many authors who do it well are also sailors themselves, like Bernard Cornwell. I don’t know if Scarrow is a sailor, but he did it WELL.

No words…

A little slow to start with, but I’ve never EVER felt such a transcendent experience at the end. I’m a former Marine, served in close combat, and well… I’m not generally disposed to cry over fiction. But, I didn’t just cry, I wept for loss, despair, joy, and contentment. Let’s put it this way, during the end I kept crying and choking out the word “Jesus!” over and over, and it was both prayer and curse. I was there. I was Jaime and Claire. I felt EVERYTHING.
Now the world is gray and bland bc I must wait the interminable length of time until the next book.

The second novel in the wildly popular First Law Trilogy from New York Times best seller Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It's enough to make a torturer want to run - if he could even walk without a stick. Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory.

Immersive Work of Art
Reviewed: 11-23-21
Few authors can hold a candle to the great works of fantasy like Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson, but Abercrombie does. He is a master. As a writer myself, I can really appreciate this.
The narrator is also fantastic, a true master in his own right, up there with Michael Kramer, Kate Reading, and Diana Porter.
The author has a unique way if immersing readers into the story. Particularly the way he can make you both simultaneously despise and love some characters like Glocter, and feel the pain he feels. Honestly, as someone who spent 3.5 years in chronic pain from a war wound, I could truly FEEL Glocters pain. It’s almost as if Abercrombie himself has experienced chronic pain bc of the way he describes it. Nine fingers is such a treasure, along with the others like Jezal. Farrow is still someone I am struggling to like, even slightly, but knowing Abercrombie’s exceptional writing and storytelling ability, it must be intentional.

Narrator is one of the best, while Sullivan’s story absolutely captivates you. I have listened to all of his books, and I mean all of them. This series is on par, or exceeds Song of Ice and Fire, and is tied with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Can’t recommend enough!

The Author is in the Same League as Diana Gabaldon
Reviewed: 09-18-20
I rarely give a full five stars, but WOW this is phenominal. I don't normally listen to things in the fantasy genre, normally historical fiction is my thing. Yet, I am so glad I tried this series, its not hokey like some fantasy novels. It is real, gritty, and the story is well developed. I am not a crying type of guy, but there have been a few places where my eyes shed a tear or two. The prose of the book, combined with the talent of the narrator, made this book addicting. I have lost hours of time that I should be sleeping because of this book.
In my mind, I hold Diana Gabaldon as the best modern (or ever, but I know thats debatable) author. Michael Sullivan is quickly climbing into my top authors. Plus, to think that he SELF-PUBLISHED a book of this caliber is a testament to his storytelling.
This series is mostly action and adventure, and is a touch light on romance, and I am of the opinion that most good stories have some degree of romance to them, regardless of the genre. This series is very light on romance, which is fine because it's still awesome. Volume 2, Rise of Empire, does have a little bit more romance than the first book. I am about 75% of the way through it (I am dreading the moment when I finish the entire series, seriously) and there is starting to be more romance. Since it is not a romance novel, I don't expect it will be like Claire and Jamie in Outlander, but I still do like a little bit.
I did see another reviewer who said that there wasn't that much action in volume 2, and I agree there wasn't as much as I thought, BUT the story is so good that I didn't even notice.
I can't praise this book enough. WELL WORTH THE CREDIT, hell its worth paying full price for.
