Story
Sunny and his kinfolk were content with their way of life. During the dry season, their clan lived alone. They hunted whenever they chose, gathered an array of plants, told stories, and took part in debates. In the rainy season, they united with the rest of their tribe. They formed a temporary city, feasted, held dances, and played games.

I would not say it was my favorite but it kept me interested to the end. Narration was good but a bit dry. Storyline has many insightful lessons and complex analogies. Not for everyone but many will concede it’s truths.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I love Kingsolvers writing and I don’t dispute it here. I just couldn’t stomach the abusive characters. It was too depressing. She’s lost me at chapter nine. 😩

I didn’t want it to end….. just when you thought the story was going one way, the author takes it to another level and introduces another great character. The fact that the whole story takes place in only 10 days is hard to imagine.

Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Favorite book of the summer
Reviewed: 08-20-21
I loved this book….. the characters were great and the narrator did well to give them all their own special quality. The sad parts were sad and then there were laugh out loud parts too. The story of the difficult times for gay men in earlier times in Ireland was no shock. Cyrle was resilient to a painful degree. The story never went back to a few of the main characters that died or consequences there of. But I just adored the story and the characters. I was sad to say good bye to them when it ended.
I suck at reviewing books, hope this encourages you to LISTEN to this. Narrators make all the difference and Stephen Hogan was great‼️

The storyline was average. Not a lot of suspense or drama. Did not care for any of the characters. The protagonist Hannah was a doormat for the spoiled brat 16year old Bailey.
I was glad when it was over.

The storyline started out well. It kept my interest until author started to jump around too much. Lost interest in some of the secondary characters and then also with some of the main characters when she finally brought them back in. I liked the ending, but overall I thought it dragged a bit in the middle.

This story of love and grief really touched me in. Personal way. I lost my husband of 22years just a year ago. The grief is still raw and I was hesitant to read this book but found it helped me validate so many of my emotions. However one does not have to be experiencing a loss or grief to appreciate this book. No, foodies and Italiophiles alike with lust over the descriptions of the food, smells, and landscapes of Sicily.
It is beautifully narrated by the author. Her love and devotion to the memory of her husband and her daughter is beautiful. The challenges of being bi- racial and strangers to a very close knit country/ island are met with dignity and grace.
I will travel this Fall back to Italy, a place my husband and I visited almost every year of our marriage. I will bring his memory with me and hope that I am able to carry on the example of Tembi’s passion for love of man and terra ferma.
